I'm not actually sure what my first single was... I seem to recall buying them for other people though. I do know my first 'album' was Now 26 on cassette, then it became the odd album tape here and there; I was lucky, for all his faults my dad is a fan of Queen and other 70's rockers at least.

My first ever CD was Dance Tip 95 and then I went mental, buying albums and singles all the time. Oasis have a lot to answer for in that regard, but mostly when it came to singles they were almost novelty ones! Like Will Smith's movie tunes and Terrorvision's Tequila.

I like music that's considered retro now (rock in all it's forms, pop from the 60s to the late 90s), I can't be doing with the autotuned animal noises.

How does Terrorvision fit in to the novelty category?!?
Terrorvision was 'Brit-pop' before 'Brit-pop' was even a thing.

I said 'almost', it's basically a party song and how many people my age would even remember it? It's not like I was a particularly big Will Smith or Terrorvision fan

Weird - I suppose I was too busy making music to bother buying other people's in installments.

Do you have anything on line or for sale that I could listen to?

And reading through this thread it's just occurred to me that although I have been making music for over 40 years and releasing it (sporadically) to the public for the last 35 of them, I have never in that time made a "single" in the classic sense with just two tracks. It's either been full-length albums or EPs with 3 or more songs on them.

Not really - most of my music-ing is live work and what was recorded has been either choral work or backing vocals. There's been the odd bit of bass, piano/keyboards or guitar but that was usually to help people out. I never usually accept any offers of free copies of what I helped make as, were I to listen to it, I'd spend the rest of time criticizing myself.

I haven't done any in years though. Since I moved to Northampton, the musical opportunities have been few and far between. These days the nearest I get is behind the mixing desk in church

First Single was The Wombles - The Womble Burrow Boogie
First Album was American Graffiti Soundtrack, followed closely by ELO - Mr Blue Sky and then the soundtrack to Xanadu!

My first ever single was a gift - Elvis: Suspicious Minds
My uncle was a BIG fan, one of those who firmly believed everyone was, underneath. :|

The first single I bought for myself - Madness: Night boat to Cairo

The question, as presented in the OP, was the first single you ever bought.
Don't make me come over there and slap you.

Mark

First single, I think, was Squeeze's Cool For Cats on vinyl. But I'm not actually that old.

Would have been late 80's I suspect, something acid house/dance-ish. 'Papua New Guinea' maybe?

My elder brother had that on pink vinyl.
If I recall correctly it used fridge magnet letters on the cover.
Ahh memories.

Rocket by Mudd. I've just realised that someone I'm friends with on FB gave me it as a birthday present when we were at primary school.

Well we weren't rich. I used to save up my pocket money. Think they were about 50p when I started seriously collecting so I'd buy one every other week.

Anyway you could record it from the radio for free :)

If you could afford to buy singles, you were richer than me. I think we got a total of £5 as pocket money over the course of the year, haphazardly as £1 here or 50p there. We got one present for birthdays and one for Christmas. And as I said in my first post, I would be content with recording them, timing it right so the presenter's voice didn't get recorded.

I remember a couple of songs from the thread but otherwise these songs are alien to me. Will definitely have a listen though.
