It’s hard to grow old gracefully when you’re not George Clooney

Article by my friend Martin. Its from a man's point of view but we all have the same issue. I get mortified seeing grey in my hair and occasionally feel vain enough to dye it but apart from that I don't want any 'work' done to make me look younger.

Does anyone feel that pressure or are you happy to go with the flow?

You & I (and I assume the vast majority of forumites) simply don't have there disposable cash to throw at cosmetic surgery. This applies to us whether male or female. Given that, sod the whole idea of fending off the passage of time. Embrace the grey! I am the age I am. Get teased a bit about it at work (I'm the oldest of the team in profession which is thought of as something of 'a young man's game') but I think sod it, the way I look is the map of the life I've had - If bits of it are a bit ragged it's because I've been having fun .

BTW, there's quite a lot of product placement in that article...

Like anyone else I was bothered by the odd grey hair (we all think we'll live forever), but once you realise you're actually worrying about what other people think... Fcuk 'em.

I actually wish I was bald instead of having hair that grows at a rate of knots! I shave it down to the wood anyway.

I care less about my appearance than my mental ability as I get older. I'd rather look old in a sound mind that look young and behave erratically. There's nothing to be done to preserve mental capacities.

my 89 year old dad prides himself with doing the telegraph crossword every day. He used to do it over breakfast but takes til mid-morning these days. Christ I cant do that

My mother's mum died at 75 of Alzheimer last year. She started losing it in her 50s and it was a slow painful process where she started lying, becoming violent, stealing, losing ability to speak etc.
I'd much prefer white hair and wrinkles than that anytime of the day.

I was born with some whites perks of having red hair!

Good solution for grey hair for men - a number 1 cut all over . I assume this will also work for women of course but due to societal programming it tends to stand out rather more.

I've come to the conclusion that people can just deal with my appearance, I shan't be changing it just to satisfy some arbitrary standard set by celebrities and the media.
For specific circumstances I will make a bit of effort but that is generally to put on clothes appropriate to get into the venue and/or to avoid p!ssing off people I actually like more than anything else (generally births, marriages, deaths, interviews and mibbles for a night out with my mates).

Nothing wrong with the odd white hair. I'm more concerned about the ginger ones.

Upstairs or downstairs?

I started getting the odd grey hair in my twenties so I've always removed them. Mainly eyebrow/beard area. Seems to be genetic as dad started in his 30s and one of my sisters in her late teens.

I like my grey hairs. More importantly so does the wife, (like my grey hair - she doesn't have any...) which means we don't need to have needless discussions about doing anything about it.

I started going grey before I was ten years old. Apparently I was dropped when a toddler, and the resulting scar on my head caused the hairs to grey prematurely from the top and left of my head. The knock on the head probably accounts for a lot else besides!

Anyone old enough to remember might recall a TV drama called "The Mallens" in the early 1980s. One of the characters also featured a grey streak of hair, so obviously my streak became known as "The Mallens' Streak".

I'm not vain enough to dye my hair to hide it. My sister decided it might be nice to try an auburn shade on me, and I ended up with a bright red streak where the grey was. Now I'm over the half century I couldn't care less.

I plan to grow old disgracefully. I gave up cosmetics nigh on 30 years ago now, and haven't missed "putting on my face" one bit. In fact, I am of the opinion that the big cosmetics firms hook us girls in early, make us wear slap so it causes premature wrinkles, and then sell us those stupid creams and unguents to "rejuvenate" our skin.

I don't care if I go white, it's my hair and if I can live with it, I honestly don't care about the opinions of others. It's kept tidy enough, or will be after this weekend's visit to the crop shop, so they have little to complain about.

My wife doesn't seem to mind - that's all that really matters.
