Purely in terms of his own reference points though, he's right. Up to a point. Then you get into everyone being equal etc...

In many respects the Church is outdated or its moral standards are not compatible with modern society.

If the grounding principles of the church say that homosexuality is wrong, then the church and its representatives cannot condone it, even if society accepts it.

I don't know the scriptures well enough to judge whether he is correct or whether Smith, as a representative of the church can say he approves - he might privately approve, but if the church's stance is that it is still immoral, he cannot give the church's blessing.

Either the church needs to be "modernized" (i.e. the scriptures chucked out and replaced with something more "modern") or people need to leave the church if they believe homosexuality is okay.

Me? I haven't been in the church for decades - in Germany I'm officially out of the church and don't pay church tax on my salary. Does that make me a bad Christian? I don't think so, just one who doesn't follow the "Word of God" blindly and without question.
