I'd love to see the Axanar film get made.
I know it's being crowd-funded, but it's not clear how well or how poorly the project it progressing.

You know what? We're obsessed with serialised [LIFTED] nowadays. I'm currently rewatching the best of DS9 and Voyager and the best eps of both are not arc based, but just great standalone stories.
The concept of the Federation and Gene's original idea of a utopia made for a rich canvas for storytelling. It was always about the characters and the relationships to me.
JJ's movies have lost some of that (perhaps necessarily) and a new TV show should totally do that again. The galaxy is a big place and there's plenty left we haven't seen. Offering some nostalgia/tie-in type stuff a la S.H.I.E.L.D. without getting too caught up in arc seasons would offer older fans (like me) a reason to a smile and feel good and still draw new fans into a rich and diverse universe of TV and movies...

Arrow and Flash have certainly shown you can do both at once.

Bollocks.
Star Trek at it's best was Breaking Bad good. Not some enjoyable, but casual comic show. People in their 20's are spoilt (with way more than just TV too). Star Trek should do what it always did and nothing else ever came close to doing.

I don't like Breaking Bad and I've never watched more than five minutes of any Trek show All I really care about is that any given show doesn't have too many crap episodes in a row. Or suddenly lurches about and back again for no reason other than lazy plotting.

That, my friend, is called youth.
Quality television is not a comic book show (much as I love them). Ask Mark. He'll tell you.

NYPD Blue? Oz? X-Files? Fair enough, you've seen some good shows. My point is, few shows are as good as, for example, The Sopranos. Most TV these days is not on that level. Despite there being an immense amount of good stuff about. Star Trek used to be on that level in it's day and could be again and any comparison to most contemporary "genre/cult" shows would be bad news.

NYPD and X-Files, but Oz was one of the most depressing shows I've ever seen.
Every decade has standout shows, and they're always in your face one way or another. Game of Thrones. Try convincing a non-geek about it until they've actually seen an episode. House of Cards. Orange Is The New Black. They're not exactly demographic dynamite, but watch 'em explode.... Same as Trek.
There are certain characters who are so strong you can do almost what you like with them, so long as there's a bit of genuine vision. That's why I generally like JJ's Trek films as a good example, and don't really care if Batman has a gun or not if it's part of the overall narrative, for instance. I want whatever feels right in context.

Every now and then, I dip into the world of AmDram Star Trek. It’s good fun.
