Anyone here use a straight razor? Any good for when you've let it go too long and don't want to spend an hour with your usual blade? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just trim it first then use some shaving oil in the lather to help it glide better
Switched to Proraso (sandalwood) a while ago and it seems a lot thicker than some of the Jermyn ones I've used, can handle oil a lot better while still making a decent lather

If you tend to let it go too long, a beard trimmer would be helpful in this situation. I vary between goatee and trimmed beard but always use the stubble setting if I've not shaved for over a week (happens when I'm on annual leave).

I'm leaning towards getting rid of it all in one go when it's this length - it's only been getting long cos I'm not in work. At the moment I'll probably run my hair shaver over it first...

I've lost a load of weight recently and no longer require a beard to hide the rolls of fat that reside where my chin used to be. I'm quite at home with DE shaving but have no equipment - I had some basic stuff but it all got lost in one of the many house-moves of recent times. Can you guys recommend some kit and some blades for me for up to £60? I'll need at least: - Razor
- Brush
- Blades
- Cream
- Alum block
Also, can you still get those variety packs of blades so I can experiment?

I still have my merkur razor. Think it was the stubbier one rather than the long handle. I prefer synthetic compared to real badger brushes. Didn't like my men-u one much but my blue beards revenge one is better. These days I prefer shaving cream over soap and love my trufitt and hill soaps. Blades - get a variety pack. my alum block is by Osama. Also have a styptic pencil.
Will post some links when I'm on the PC.

I've used The Traditonal Shaving Company, Connaught Shaving, and these days use the Shaving Shack. Good service from all but the latter tends to be cheapest.

I'd like to point out that the ginger half nearly took his head off the other day with a vintage razor. He won't mention that though

'twas but a minor flesh wound (very close to a major artery that took a fairly long time to stop bleeding)
