My personal favourite rubbish rule:

The plurals of stadium, octopus, forum....

STADIUMS, OCTOPUSES and FORUMS

(to be fair, so many people use the latin plurals that they're now pretty much accepted)

I thought it was 'octopodes'.

Indeed.

  • Not only is the Latin of status not 'stati' (which makes no sense even in Latin), the English plural is 'statuses'
  • English is not a classical language so split your infintives as much as you want. This crap rule was just made up out of thin air by a nineteenth century American preacher with no formal language training.
  • I before E except after C has more exceptions than words that follow the rule (and isn't even the complete saying...)
  • Writing was never supposed to be a shibboleth - it's supposed to be a graphical representation of the sounds we actually say. Therefore:
    • 'Centre' is spelled incorrectly - it should be spelled 'senter'
    • Through and though SHOULD be spelled 'thru' and 'tho' (or 'thru' and 'dho' if you wish to separate the thorn from the eth)
    • Either say 'Berkshire' or write 'Barkshire' - grow up.
    • It's pronounced 'Magdalen College' in my house, not 'Maudlin College' - w*nkers

Rollercoasters rely on the 'envelope of protection'.
That is, they modify cars with bits of wood representing the furthest reaches of Brer Human's arms and legs, and check nothing on the ride can contact them.

The first track's brilliant  , like The Darkness with an 80's vibe.

Turns out, the ad campaign for mobile phone timewaster 'Game of War' (with Kate Upton in it) cost about $40 million.
About $5 million more than the entire development cost for Borderlands 2.

Let that sink in for a moment.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/07/29/how-coca-cola-affects-body-infographic_n_7895304.html

Quote:
First 10 minutes
10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don't immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavour, allowing you to keep it down.
20 minutes in
Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
40 minutes in
Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
45 minutes in
Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centres of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
60 minutes in
The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
After 60 minutes
The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

I know all that from med school. Doesn't stop me drinking Coca Cola or any other sugary fizzy drink. I just drink less of it now than I used to.

I rarely drink cola. I did buy some Cream Soda on my way back; I haven't drunk that in years.
