Killing animals for food I can understand but I don't agree in killing any animal for 'sport'.

I guess you do?

No I don't

But I also don't see any inherent problem in the act of shooting a lion

On one level, I see your point in that an animal is an animal. However, the difference between a lion and a deer for example, is that the lion is a pretty rare creature these days, whereas deer are extremely common still.

There's also the manner in which it was killed, namely being shot with bow and arrow and then tracked for 40 hours before it was actually killed. That's a long time in pain, and is so far off what is acceptable.

My own 2p is that killing for sport is something that I abhor. To kill for food, for self-defence/protection, or for animal management, I can understand. If you want to kill an animal, make it a fair fight. Do it with your bare hands.

Much discussion of this still on the radio during my commute. One angle I hadn't considered was made - if you want the thrill and challenge of stalking a wild animal, even a predator like a lion, take a camera, not a weapon. You'll probably need to get closer and you'll be able to show off the 'trophy' much more widely and much more easily.

It wasn't just a lion he wanted to kill, he wanted to kill an elephant too.

What Amy said sums up exactly how I feel and it another reason why we are friends.

So you think killing endangered animals is OK?

Good grief!

Actually, pretty much all animals probably do think exactly that, because there are very few animals on the planet intelligent enough to know that actions have consequences. If a cat kills a mouse, he's not thinking 'oh lord, that mouse might have had a family'. However we are probably the only animals who do understand the long term consequences of our actions and also go on hunting safaris. The idea anybody could think killing a lion was 'Ok' is... astonishing. What he did was pretty horrible by any standards.

THIS

We are the only animal on the planet that has wiped out whole species of another animal and put the planet in danger. I have never heard of a wild animal killing so many others for food there are none left but if you would like to enlighten me that would be great.

And I'll smile when I want to :)

Actually, there's a group of chimps that have nearly wiped out a monkey population. http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20150728-chimps-nearly-wiped-out-monkeys

That said, we are sentient. We know all about lions. We don't need physical trophies. There aren't many lions left in the world. What we have left are important to the genetic diversity of the species, if there's to be a species left for the future. These animals aren't like cockroaches.

Well that does make sense. If an animal was going to do it it would be monkeys as they are genetically so close to us.
