Is it the beginning of the end for online comments?Occasionally I read them but not very often and it's very rare that I make any comments

I don't mind a debate or a chat, but some people are just looking to boost their self-esteem by bashing other commentators.

I tend to read comments. You'll get scaremongerers, racists, xenophobes, fascists, trolls, anti-this, anti-that, bacward hilbillies and that's just the dailymail readers. Mosts places I visit will have a few comments that add nothing eg that was cool. Sometimes, you get useful bits of information and real insight and that's basically why i read the comments section.

Ironically, I couldn't be bothered to read the comments on that story.

I will usually have a glance through comments. In actual fact the website who's commenting system I find the most infuriating is the BBC News one - it only shows a small number of comments so you have to click for more but if it's a hot topic doing so only adds a few more and you end up having to scroll through stuff you've already read to get to the new ones. It's especially bad when someone is responding to an earlier post. It's all very well them being numbered but if you have to click through 2 pages to get to see an original comment you just give up.

Couldn't care less about comments. Apart from something like Jalopnik, but for the rest of the web I really don't care. He types, commenting on a story...

Maybe it is just the sites I visit, but I like reading the comments on Film and TV articles. I normally see a lot of very informed discussion taking place, not necessarily related to the posted article either - a bit like x404! Sites that require a login (which is pretty much all of them these days) don't get commented on by me, but I'll usually be able to find the Fb link and comment on that.

I'd prefer to start a thread about a news item on here and discuss it here. Tends to be a far higher quality of comment IMHO.

The comments section on the Daily Mail site is the best thing ever!

I find if I'm feeling ok or even happy, I look to the comments on articles in the Independent to bring me back down to earth. If I moderated that site there would effectively be no comments.
