Must admit, I don't check the authenticity of any coins I am given. If I were to receive a fake, I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem spending it.

Peter.

Most £1 coin fakes are easy to spot as the wording around the edge should be able to read it with Queens head on top - if the wording on the edge is upside down then its a fake.

Thanks for that, John. The way I check for counterfeit coins is to scratch them with a genuine coin to see if it wears down or the coating comes off. Your method is much quicker though!

Peter.

Is that for real? If so, then out of the 6 in my pocket 2 or 3 are fake. One has no wording at all, so I'm unsure.

I'd heard you should check that the head and tail are orientated in the same direction, which all of mine are.

The best way to check authenticity of a coin is to try and spend it in a (preferably busy) shop. If the cashier rejects it, then it may well be a fake. If they accept it and put it in the till, then it didn't matter anyway. :D

Does anyone know of a price list of coins.

I've got a collection of all those 50ps and £2 coins with strange tails things (for commemorative reasons).

Some of them are over 20 years old too and they are all barely used.

Thanks

Oliver

I thought £2.00 coins were only issued in the late 1990s?

Peter.

I don't understand that. It says here that 20p pieces from between 1993 and 2003 are worth £1.00 each. I have plenty I can sell for 80p profit, but there's nothing special about these coins is there?

Peter.

All the prices refer to the BU quality which is...

Brilliant Uncirculated (BU): Usually implies full mint lustre.(US: MS-67)

So basically it has come straight out of the mint and in to your posession.

Anything less than BU means it's worth face value probably.
