Thousands have died after being found fit for work, DWP figures show | Society | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015 ... wp-figures

Quote:
Nearly 90 people a month are dying shortly after being declared fit for work, according to new data that has prompted campaigners and Labour leadership contenders to call for an overhaul of the government’s welfare regime.

Statistics released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on Thursday revealed that 2,380 people died between December 2011 and February 2014 within 14 days of a work capability assessment (WCA) concluded they were able to work.

Seriously, if those numbers are correct, what are the chances of the scheme NOT being responsible? Within two weeks for that many people, even across the UK? Is it even including the devolved regions? :?

Basically, they've been very clever/underhand. Essentially, they received an FOI request asking for certain items of data. After a lot of legal wrangling, they released exactly the items of the data the FOI request asked for and not one digit more.

Unfortunately the people who put the FOI request in were campaigners not statisticians, so they didn't ask the right question. The data we have is more or less useless. Yes, at first glance, that number does suggest a causal link, but the data to actually prove that causal link isn't present in the release.

The whole thing obviously does suggest the DWP have something they'd really, really rather the public/press didn't know. But at the moment whatever anyone deduces that might be, they can simply say the conclusion is incorrect and nobody can say otherwise.

It's politically expedient but it's utterly morally bankrupt.

Yep, how many died in car accidents, run over by a bus, fell off a cliff, got chomped up by a machine at work, killed by a hit man, caught some disease from an unsanitised telephone... There are many ways to die that don't have anything to do with being at work, or being declared fit to work.
