East endears is a vital public service. It reminds people who are depressed that it could be a whole lot worse and that maybe things aren't quite as bad as they think.

For the amount of things I watch on the BBC, it must amount to about £10 per episode, which is a lot of money and something I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pay for if it went to a subscription based service. It is a long read, but this article from last year is a good starting point for why a subscription based BBC isn't really the way to go. Mark

The BBC News bulletin used to be at 9, and it marked the start of the watershed. Anything after the news would be far more grown up than anything before. I wouldn't mind a return to that time, TBH.
Not sure I'd want a subscription only BBC. There's lots there that I don't watch, but lots that I do. For example, I was pretty much locked on BBC4 last night, and there's more on iPlayer from last night that needs catching up on.

if you were watching the Ada Lovelace documentary, you might also be interested in this which is part of the same season and has the same narrator as the Lovelace doc. Perfect commute fodder.

The Ada Lovelace documentary was very interesting, and they even had accidental expert Sydney Padua to talk about (and draw) Ada. You may want to seek out her Lovelace and Babbage cartoons. Wonderful stuff. Sadly, though, that documentary is too adult in content for me to show to the Code Club kids. A shame, but what do you expect if her father was Lord Byron...
