I once had a boss tried to rouse everybody's competitive spirits with a long rambling speech about how only winners get remembered. There was lots of embarrassed fidgeting when he told us all that nobody knows who was the second man to walk on the moon.
He was actually a nice guy and nobody wanted to humiliate him, but he should have made shorter speeches.

I am my own boss at work, I choose what to do and when Im probably considered to be an donkeyhole boss to the people who give unwarrented attitude so naturally I wont treat them well, stereotypical trash truck drivers, then theres the good ones who I get on with and therefore I go out my way to help those etc

I kid you not. I only stayed there a few weeks, but I think he might have made the same claim before and nobody had been cruel to be kind enough to disabuse him. I did once have a boss who might be a genuine psychopath. He used to manipulate idiots into feuding with each other over nothing, and he kept a big bowl full of ripped up business cards from staff who rage quit their jobs.

I have both had and been a female boss and I can say unequivocally that it's *entirely* dependant on the female in question, just the same as it is with the male version. Women are generally seen to have had to be more aggressive and more 'male' in their fight to get the top spot, I don't know how true that is but I've had good female bosses AND good male bosses, I've got 2 female and 1 male boss now and they are all just fine.

I've had several female bosses over the years and in general they have been far better than the male bosses.

I've never had a good female boss. I'm not saying there aren't any but mine have always been terrible.

I have been self-employed since '85. People I have worked for are either clients or their representatives. Age/experience has educated me. The ones who were dicks, I can see what was troubling them. The ones who were good or better, it's just down to character. No one has been a hero, one or two were horrible.
Mind you it depends where you set the bar, sometimes the hero is the person who pays the invoice upon receipt. They are my heroes.

I only ever had one bad boss and she was a total bitch for a while then went back to being ok.
Current boss is ace as he's in America so I get to do what I want (within reason)

We were told on Monday that if we were having work problems we were to approach management.
So when a colleague had her boss mention such matters today (we're talking three different roles at once here, and not the sort you wanna drop the ball with) the resident psycho bitch boss jumped in and said the jobs were easy and that my colleague could visit occupational health if she wanted to... When my colleague's boss complained to senior management about this, they outright lied to him via email about what was said in a conversation he was part of. Oh, and that conversation had nothing to do with psycho bitch in the first place.
This lead to a series of emails where my colleague's boss gave them both barrels right across our entire project to keep himself right via a trail. Told senior management they did nothing about psycho bitch despite having multiple complaints in. So now pretty much ALL the senior staff are having meetings over this one nightmare of a person. How much do you wanna bet it gets buried? Even though she can't go a full week without causing work-induced mental illness in multiple staff members?

What it needs is someone to quit then site these conversations (including the fact they've been informed of her unreasonable behaviour multiple times and done nothing) in a constructive dismissal tribunal. Once the SLT see how big a cheque they'll have to write to get out of that one, they might be inclined to do something about it before it happens a second time.

That really is the sort of thing that's required. We already know HR are corrupt so it could be quite the payout once all was said and done. Funnily enough she was off today... When my colleague's boss met with the senior management team last night they tried to get him to discuss how he knew other people weren't happy lol. Sensing the obvious trap, he said he wouldn't discuss other people but that there was no hiding the tension any more and that people inevitably talked to each other. Management then tried to claim that psycho bitch was a victim of gossip! In reality, she sits badmouthing the staff so that by the time someone has a chat with management about her they're already a beaten docket. When our main boss realised he was only hearing certain allegations for the first time and became curious, his immediate underling jumped in with a load of waffle before they could go any further. It's like something out of Private Eye. Varying levels, but they are utterly determined to protect her. When I approached the underling about psycho's attitude towards people and the work, I was asked did I want to do something different and was I struggling! I was also asked did I want to visit occupational health, basically implying I was imagining it all I wasn't doing the work expected of me I could just deal with it on my own Clearly she had been in his ear without me knowing it. And also that management finds it perfectly acceptable to burn people out so long as they play nice and go to a counsellor.

I'm joining the [LIFTED] bandwagon. Without exception.
But most guys weren't perfect. Just easier to live with as you knew where you stood.
Out of interest, I'm reading a lot that people want to be left alone to do their job without interference. Is that fair? What do you want out of a boss?
I'm gonna be one shortly for the first time & I've got a lot of personal experience to draw on, but I'm interested in your opinions...
