Sweden is becoming the world's first cashless society | TechRadar http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of- ... ty-1306733From my own perspective, bring it on! When it comes to taxis it's a nightmare - get some old-fashioned cash from a machine that only ever wants to give you twenties, tip even when you don't want to because you'll have to sit there awkwardly otherwise (and local drivers do not like twenties, but that's their problem), wind up with a handful of change that you're keeping handy for said tipping... repeat if you're getting a taxi home. This has prompted me to get a bike, so we'll see how that goes! The only other time I need cash is paying the window cleaner or a tradesperson. I suppose card fees and associated issues are the only real things holding us back now; the tech's dirt cheap. Anyway, would you miss cash?

Absolutely. I'm white knuckling my way to pay day on the last fiver in my wallet. If I don't need to eat, I'll be fine.

I use cash most of the time. I probably use my cards once a week or so. Only bigger purchases are put on the debit card (weekly shop etc.) and only internet shopping gets put on the credit card.
I can't remember the last time I used a taxi, probably 2011.

Uber's not likely to fly in Ulster*, and they're even dodgier than the current drivers. At least the ex-terrorists have licences and are vetted! * for historical reasons, certain people like cash and person to person interaction

Sorry dude. Person to person? Who do you think drives the Ubers? Also lots of cabs take cards, it doesn't have to be cash but yes some places will be more advanced than others.

As you might imagine, we've got a lot of ex-terrorists who can't get jobs elsewhere driving taxis. But it's also a wonderful way to get up to all sorts... Belfast city centre has a surprising amount of black taxis for instance, and they don't associate with the mini-cab drivers. And so on. Kinda people who like cash and have political representation these days - we have LOTS of taxi firms per street over here

Uber is illegal over here - or rather they operate, but their drivers are all (most?) driving illegally.
Under German law, in order to drive a taxi you have to have a professional driving licence. Also, in order to be able to insure your vehicle for the transportation of paying passengers, you need a professional driving licence.
Uber doesn't check to see if you have a professional driving licence and doesn't seem to care. Which means most, if not all, of its drivers are operating illegally. Which in turn means if they have an accident, they are not insured, so personally liable for all damage and damages - additionally a hefty fine, loss of driving licence and possible imprisonment.

I rarely take cash with me and have been like this for at least 3-4 years. But I always need change for parking (old fashioned coin meters, or just doesn't accept cards). I prefer to tip in cash.

I'm guessing there will be many rounds of legal battles to establish whether it is Uber or the individual drivers who are liable in such circumstances.

Once a week I add cash to my card in work to pay for lunch etc , once a month I buy a toll pass for the bridge ( £22 ) effectively everything else goes on plastic.

Never let it be said of the Germans that they're fond of a silly regulation.

I mostly use my card for getting cash out.
Although I might have to revisit this policy when they start putting that bloody criminal Churchill on the £5 note.
