Bobbies on the beat coming to an end, senior officers say - BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34651119

Does that bother you? When did you last see a copper walking on the street? It's a rare occurrence here...

It's things like this that bother me more

Quote:
Mr Mackey said the force had to think of "completely different models of working" to tackle cyber crime.

"We should be working with business and industry to achieve that... and they can help with paying for that," he added.

Asked if that meant direct funding for policing programmes, he said: "Potentially. I think that is one of the things we are going to have to think about as we go forward."

Mr Mackey admitted there were "all kinds of ethical hurdles" to consider and that it would not be comfortable for an independent police force.

"But we absolutely have to explore it," he added.

A certain amount of "DIY policing" would also help the force, he said.

"Getting people involved in the whole notion of prevention work and crime detection work has got to be part of the future."

Nothing like a police force for hire, especially an ethically and morally bankrupt one like his. And who is he talking about with the DIY bit?

Also, it's a little hard to believe that crime's down when a lot of the major police forces admitted cooking the books not too long ago

There's paramilitary forces overe here that would fit that category.

So when someone doing the 'diy bit' does something you know, a little extreme, are they going to accept some game having totally abdicated their responsibilities? I suspect not.

A 'beat copper' stopped my house getting burgled - or more accurately scared the burglar away before he could actually grab anything of real value - a couple of years back. So yes, I think I would miss the beat copper actually. Of course there was also that story that they're not even going to bother investigating burglaries any more anyway...

Not seen a copper on the beat here for over a decade. The police station near us closed ages ago. The only police presence we get is the helicopter that buzzes around for whatever reason.
