Netflix New Releases: Movies And TV Shows Streaming Soon - CINEMABLEND

Recent updates have not been great with Netflix IMO. There's still good stuff, but I find Prime topping it.

They're pretty interchangable now.

This post has spoilers for Jessica Jones S1.
You have been warned.
pcernie wrote:
Jessica Jones - I'm 5 or 6 episodes in, and like Daredevil before it, it goes all slightly unnecessary with the mood and dramatics for three episodes before settling down into something that won't alienate the average punter. At the beginning it especially feels like they're trying to shock you with GoT-style violence and sex - a bit off-putting when you'd much prefer the story moved a bit quicker. And that's partly because the lead isn't exactly a likeable character compared to... well, almost anyone who is leading a major TV show. Must state that this is slowly getting better as the series moves on! (This is all now a standard problem when it comes to shows about 'capes' for some reason)

The similarities to Daredevil are multitude (very slight spoilers ahead)....... A villain who initially is only referenced in mutterings and whispers, partially shown etc. Said villain being almost the sole focus of the series. Mentions of the wider Marvel universe, and taking the piss out of the comic book inspiration. The use of the media as background-building... I personally was hoping it would be at least slightly different to Daredevil, but so far it's the exact same thing with less interesting action scenes.

Look, don't get me wrong, it's watchable and not a bad show at all. But I just haven't taken to the hero and villain the way I normally do with these things, and it all feels slightly bland because I've seen so much of it before. All that said, it is getting better as I reach the halfway point. Also, the female demographic's apparent enjoyment of a psycho bloke being investigated by a cold, messed-up woman should see this in good stead ;)
I finished S1 a couple of days ago.
I don't think you can really compare Jessica Jones (the show) to Daredevil (the show).
This show is less about the action (though there's plenty of it) and much more about the psychological impacts of a very serious trauma.
Off the top of my head, I can't recall a genre show that has dealt which psychological effects of PTSD in such an in-depth manner.
The main problem of the show for me was the inconsistent portrayel of the powers.
When Luke Cage and Jessica are fighting and pushing each-other through walls, it sort of sets a standard for what these characters can do.
A couple more standalone detective stories wouldn't've hurt either, it seems that pretty much everything was concerned with Kilgrave with zero letup, just a one episode break as a breather would have helped, perhaps with less of those annoying neighbours too.
I really can't think of why those characters were included at all, as if there wasn't enough creepy weirdness going on already without those two needlessly adding to it.

Anyway, I like it. Much more of a dark, psychological thriller than standard superhero fare we've had before - even Daredevil didn't reach the depths that this show pushes past with ease.
And now I'm reading that S2 may be delayed. *sigh*

Barely, you might actually enjoy it because it's more of a woman's tale relatively speaking.

I'm only part way through episode 1 so far, but it seems promising so far.

Ernie's comment about it resembling GoT for sex and violence was all it took to get me to try it.
