Hmm, everywhere I've worked has done it on a rotational basis. If you do Christmas Eve cover, then you get New Year's Eve free and vice versa. If it is a bigger team, then two do it in the first year and they both get the opportunity to take the whole period off the next year and somebody else does the cover.

My manager and I are doing the week before Christmas and two others are doing the week between Christmas and New Year. Although with Christmas and New Year falling on a Friday, that means only one day's bank holiday (well, Friday + Saturday, but I don't work Saturdays anyway, still it is better than when Christmas falls on a Saturday, then you don't get any time off, unless you work in retail).

Our place does it first-come, first-served like all other holidays. Most people seem to leave it until October to try to book.

I book my holidays in the first week of January - like a good German ;)

I voluntarily worked last year though to free up a space for two other people to go off.

You're late! I'm doing mine now... My wife works for a Kinderhort (sort of after school care) and has set times when she has to take holiday (the Hort is closed), so I already know my holiday for next year.

My place gives us the time between Christmas and New Year as extra days off so we don't have to use our holiday

Our place closes between Xmas and New Year and we are given privilege days to cover (most of) it.

Three days of our annual leave must be reserved for the xmas/new year shutdown. Although, I'm hearing a rumour that we're getting xmas eve off this year, as a freebie. :)

Previously I've always taken the whole fortnight off covering Christmas and New Year so I could go back up to Scotland to visit family and stuff.
This year, as I did that last year, I have to cover over Christmas and New Year. We get the bank holidays plus an early finish on Christmas Eve (half day). I don't envisage being terribly busy while I'm over those weeks but my parents are coming down here for Christmas so I have to do the cooking this time
I made the Christmas cake at the end of October so hopefully it will still be edible by the time Christmas actually rolls round.

Some [LIFTED] [LIFTED] left a hubcap and tyre threading on the footpath - the threading wrapped round my ankles and now I'm in such an AE queue. Front tooth nearly went through my bottom lip before snapping, and I'm bruised and sliced. Even lost my glasses in the bloody dark.

Looking like something from a Saw movie, I then had to warn everyone else walking towards me since I couldn't see the wire to get rid of it!

That's [LIFTED]. Hope the A&E queue isn't as bad as here and you feel better soon.

Three hours I was in, which is quick considering the place was packed. I'm not complaining considering there were people with far worse injuries than me. Luckily I bit a clean hole in the lip apparently so I just need to be careful and I'm on anti-inflamatories or however you spell them... Tooth hurts like fcuk as you'd imagine, everything's numb until tomorrow morning no doubt ;)

Actually found my glasses! Couldn't believe the amount of blood I lost
