Downloads for Windows 10 November big-bang build axed by Microsoft http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/11/24 ... ease_1511/ION, they've apparently started killing popular freeware progs with an update - no doubt another 'accident' to go with all the others.

I had it running on three machines, two were previously running 8.1 and one running 7 - all upgraded from clean installs.
No perceptible benefits over 8.1, but loads of downsides. Slower, buggier and sometimes completely unresponsive for several seconds. Not a huge fan of the default privacy settings either.
I put up with it for exactly four weeks and reverted to the previous OSes. I have the option to reinstall it, should it finally be worthwhile, but I don't really care if the timer runs down and I get "stuck" with 8.1 etc..

Allegedly it is "only" things like old versions of Catalyst CP and CPUz, where the old version would cause Windows 10 to crash. Still a bad show that they didn't warn the users that the incompatible software needed to be de-installed.

Microsoft employs controversial tactics to push Windows 10 upgrade | TechRadar http://www.techradar.com/news/software/ ... de-1311279It's just further proof that they'd like to treat their customers like crap instead of, well, customers.

Google and its OEMs get bad press, because they won't update, Microsoft get bad press because they try to get you to apply updates... Still not getting it on my Surface Pro 3.

I was just thinking Apple would be crucified for what MS are doing.

I did like Jon Honeyballs' comment in the current issue of PC Pro (and I'm paraphrasing a bit here) that if MS carry on down this path then sooner or later they'll end up with 'Update to Windows 10 right now or this kitten gets it'.
I had a go on Windows 10 because my Mum had updated her laptop to it. Not impressed with Windows update at all, especially as it kept trying to push the 'November update' thingy but failed every time. No idea why. Also, there s no longer any description of what each update is much beyond Security update or Update for Windows. Fair enough a lot of people don't read much further into updates than that but I kind of want to know what an update actually does before it's installed. I also don't see why they won't make a bloody decision - either have the Settings Panel or the Control Panel, don't pretend the Settings one is all you need but then still hide some stuff in the old Control Panel. It also broke, at least partially, Kaspersky so I had to uninstall it and reinstall the latest version (because the auto update kept crashing with a BSOD - not terribly reassuring).
I can't say the experience endeared me to the idea of updating my home computer from 8.1 tbh.

Nah, Apple are worse, it is upgrade or don't get any patches. At least if you resist the upgrade you will still get patches until mid 2020. With OS X you'll be lucky to get updates in 2017, if you don't update. My 2004 Windows notebook will get updates until 2020 (running Windows 7), my 2007 iMac stopped getting updates over 2 years ago.

The settings is getting more and more with each new release, but it is a transition process and they haven't finished the transition yet. Same as "modern", in 8 it was full screen only (with the option of a split screen with 2 windows), in 10 it has now been extended to have resizeable windows like legacy Win32 applications. Apart from my company Surface Pro 3, I've upgraded all of our machines to 10 and we haven't experienced any problems so far - 7 PCs dating from 2007 through to 2014.

According to heise.de the Consumer Rights authority in Baden Württenberg is looking into the matter of Microsoft trying to force the updates on people. As MS has not responded with a legal declaration that they will stop, they are taking them to court. http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/ ... 45781.html (German) Interestingly all the reports say that it secretly downloads the data in the background, but on all of the machines I've upgraded (including 3 at the weekend), that was not the case. In every case it spent the following 10 - 15 minutes downloading the install files.

I meant the tactics specifically and Apple have put out some weird and wonderful updates too, but Apple aren't deliberately pissing in your chips every month.

My mid-2010 iMac is fully up to date so far, but then it is getting towards the end of it's expected life, and I wouldn't be surprised if it falls off the curve soon. I've been toying with exercising my education discount and a loan, mind you. Those new 5k iMacs are quite nice.

You don't have to put up with Windows 10's new lock screen ads | TechRadar http://www.techradar.com/news/software/ ... ds-1315854I'd ask if MS are mental but greedy seems to be more like it. They know damn well the average user has no idea how to switch off the BS they're flooding their PC with. It increasingly looks like I'll have to read up on Linux or buy a Mac and do the same in a few years, I'm not putting up with my every move being spied on by default whilst being shown ads at every opportunity.
