It's good to see our peeps are taking it so seriously... 'Angry? When you've got so much choice!?'

I was thinking something similar whilst buying toothpaste the other day - the Colgate that covers just about every tooth situation you can think of is the same price as the 'bog standard' one, the one that covers two situations, a specific situation...

I buy whatever is on offer, and generic painkillers. It's worth checking the licensing numbers on packaging to see what generic meds are in fact the same as expensive ones.

I haven't bought Nurofen for years.
Mum is (or was) a pharmacist so I was pointed in the direction of generics pretty early on.
I do buy ibuprofen lysine, but normally the Tesco own brand version. I find it gives me fewer issues than plain ibuprofen if I take it on an empty stomach.

I had noticed the multiple specific type of pain versions of the same stuff (Tesco are at it as well). Always buy the cheapest on possible.

There can be very rare occasions when a brand version of something is worth it, but usually only if you have a bad reaction to another excipient in the cheaper and versions. Not something I've experienced myself.

Whatever is the cheapest - although usually paracetemol generics.

I used to take Ibo for my back, but found I was quadrupling the standard dose (to get me through a weekend to see the doctor on the Monday) and it still didn't even begin to touch the pain, so I just stopped taking anything; as taking 4 x the recommended dose is probably going to do more harm than good. The doctor tried prescribing me 800mg tablets, but they just didn't do anything for the pain. The same for diclofenac, it doesn't touch the pain. The last time, he gave me a cortisone injection with some stronger pain killer mixed in . the first day he gave me another painkiller injection, but it didn't help either, so I got the cortisone + stronger painkiller the next day.

At the moment, I can't stand up straight for a few minutes, if I have been sitting and I am in constant pain. It is time to visit the doctor again...

Soluble Aspirin here - I like the taste and just crunch them up in my mouth

I grant it tastes a bit better than paracetamol but yuck.

I think fizzy painkillers is the only thing that I cannot swallow, just fizzy warm salty liquid, bleh

I take ibuprofen (generic supermarket brand) for anything inflamed and paracetamol (ditto) for everything else. I'm allergic to anything salicylate so aspirin is a big no.

I did wonder, when I saw their ads, if it was the same stuff in a different box.

I always buy the supermarket generic stuff.

I can't remember the last time I took any painkillers. I use paracetamol for fever but not for pain. Ibuprofen upsets my asthma so I avoid it.

The problem here is that the general public will look for remedies for a specific purpose eg back pain, period pains etc. So it makes sense to market it to those specific groups. What the company should have done is add in an extra differing ingredient for each type and they'd be fine. But they'd have to get it licensed etc.

For 98% of people (a figure grabbed from the air), generic is fine. There are a few who don't tolerate the other ingredients along with the active ingredient for whatever reason.

As long as all the products were the same price I can't see it being a major issue.

Supermarket / chemist own brands are 35p for 12 or 60p for 24 so as Camille says they are not the same price.

Nurofen starts at about £2.50.

Even within the nurofen brand prices were quite different
