What, a group of dozens of men? It's not practical for members of the public to take them on.

There should have been any number of (pissed-up) blokes about if the crowd(s) of scumbags weren't just sticking out like a sore thumb, that's what I can't get my head around. And in these days of social media? None of it makes much sense to me I'm afraid :?

There were similar incidents in Bremen, but Köln is taking the brunt of it, because one victim was allegedly raped.

The problem is, you have a large number of very loud revellers all screaming and shouting, you have a group of men who encircle a woman who is out alone and those directly in front of her intimidate her and take away her smartphone and purse, who even notices that in a huge crowd? If you can't see the victim until after the group has disbanded and you can't hear them over the sounds of fireworks and shouting of revellers?

They have arrested 4 people so far. They think it was a group of around a dozen or so men, according to German reports. The 500 - 1000 attackers is not something that I have seen on the German news channels, the news is reporting around 1,000 drunken men in the square. The number of reported robberies and assaults is up to 100 now.

De Maiziére (Interior Ministe) made a big speech about the failure of the Cologne police and that the State Police should have been called in, but Heiko Maas (Justice Minister) then pointed out to him that the police were indeed active and the State Police were also on the scene. Since then he has been very quiet.

Quote:
He said questions needed to be asked as to “how it was possible that this thousand-strong group was able to come to Cologne and meet up there”.

It sounds like they are going to use it as a rallying call for more wide ranging powers over intercepting electronic communications, which is not allowed in Germany on data protection and constitutional grounds. They tried implementing an equivalent of RIPA, but the Constitutional Court and the EU Court both told the German Government that the powers were to wide ranging and that they should go back to the drawing board.

Not sure how that would have helped in this case anyway?

IIRC A similar thing happened to an American reporter while reporting in that Egyptian (?) square where the protesters gathered for ages during the Arab spring. It may even have happened on air, crazily.

The bare and unpleasant to confront fact is there is a subset of young male arabic society that is pretty damn misogynistic and uncivilised. It would be naive to believe none off those idiots have come across to Europe during the refugee crisis. The question is how do you deal with the perpetrators if convicted- send them to jail or send them back k to Egypt/Libya/Syria/Wherever?

Have they actually definitively confirmed the alleged perpetrators were of Arab descent?
I wasn't sure if that had been confirmed or if it was just a knee-jerk assumption or scare tactic being peddled by groups opposed to immigration. The initial reports I saw seem to be somewhat contradictory about the make up of the group but I haven't really been following it since then.

In the news report I read, every witness or victim statement said the perpetrators were of 'middle eastern' appearance. Obviously I'm getting that second hand but if the press have misrepresented every statement on the attacks that would be a) deeply worrying and b) soon found out.

It appears from what Dave has said the 'crowd of 1000' might have been a mistake/scare tactic but there's a degree of corroboration for the appearance being distinct. And the events described are entirely consistent with the example of the American journalist I mentioned earlier in which the attackers were Arabic (I always assumed they were local Egyptians but I guess it's possible the protests had attracted extremists from other places).

The arrested suspects were from Algeria and Morocco AFAIK.

Fair enough. As I said, I only really saw an initial report and there seemed to be some question at the time whether the reports it was predominately people of Arab descent were accurate or not.
Regardless, not good.

BBC News are now reporting that there have been complaints of similar behaviour in other German cities.

I read the Guardian article, it contradicts what the police, council and German press are saying... :?

On Monday, the talk was about similar robberies in Bremen (see my post above), I haven't heard about other cities in the news over here.

BBC Article
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35256576

As well as the attacks in Cologne, women were targeted in Hamburg and Stuttgart.
In Duesseldorf, 40km (25 miles) to the north of Cologne, police have been investigating claims that gangs of men from North Africa have been robbing their victims by deliberate body contact.
They are examining whether there is a link to similar claims in Cologne.
