I think you need a proper eBook reader for ebooks. Tablets and phones hurt your eyes after a while.

Really? I read on my iPhone for at least 3 hours a day and never have any problems with my eyes

I find the light on the Kindle more pleasant to read with than my Surface or phone but I did used to manage OK with my old Nexus at night with the brightness turned down. I've never used night mode on an iDevice to compare to a Kindle.

Unlike Carolyn, I don't use iBooks but I do use the Kindle app and have white text on black background. Not sure how you drew that conclusion, especially as I've just said it's great in the dark. The downside is battery life depletion and whilst the kindle is fine, my iphone battery depletes more quickly - it's a pain to have to charge a phone so you can read more of a book.

I manage the charging very easily without having to stop reading.... just saying

My phone depletes by up to 50% and often it's not 100% to begin with. Charging means I'm tethered to a socket and can't roll around in bed and read.

It isn't the colours you use, it is the screen technology involved. http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/d ... vard-studyAs said before, they didn't use any eBook readers in the study, just iPads - which they called eBook readers! Whilst the study results are interesting, I find it very bad form to label eBook readers as bad, even though they never tested a single eBook reader! Further tests afterwards showed that the likes of Kindle, Tolino, Sony etc. eBook readers with sidelighting don't emit this light.

Books, it has to be books. You don't get that nice musty smell from an e-reader like you do from books that have started to age Large format illustrated books , oooh heaven yours wecrookie

Photography books are a different matter. I love a good physical photo book sitting on my shelves. I still have a number of them, granted, most are my own, but I'm working on collecting ones from other people. Without doubt I'd vote a physical photobook over that of its electronic equivalent. Mark

I think though that I will in the end get an e-book
The only question then is do I get a Kindle and be locked in or something like a nook (and if I buy Kindle books just convert them to epub)

Books have one other advantage. You can tell, just by holding them, how far through you are! Even closed, with a book mark, from a distance, you can tell.

Other way, buy the Kindle and convert epub to mobi.

Just to resurrect the thread slightly....... Why this way (i.e. get a Kindle and convert) rather than the other way around (I have borrowed a mates Kindle and so far so good)

The Kindle's just a much better machine IMO, plus you can download samples, better selection of titles at much better prices, set up other people on your account, sales, font selection, free credits often, no stupid headers if you don't want them, lending library, loads of reasons.
