Normally this wouldn't bother me. But now I have the same problem a lot of motorists do. Windows are iced over, doors can be frozen stuck. Before I moved, I lived with my parents and used to park in the garage. Warm clean car, no faffing around with ice scrapers or de-icers. Now I'm going to need to buy a windscreen cover and maybe some salt grit.

We use an old blanket over the windscreen and about 1/3 of the front of the car - makes the morning routine much quicker

I think the concern I had with fabrics like that is they would absorb moisture and in turn freeze and possibly stick to the glass. Otherwise I would have bought one. I bought the missus a windscreen cover last week. She used it once and has forgotten it daily since!

They do freeze and it comes off like a board - not had any sticking to glass or paintwork

Just for once apparently it's much colder down south than it is in the north.

My friend just told me it was -6 in Surrey and my clock said -2 in North London this morning. Quite a difference considering Surrey isn't that far away

I originally come from near Glasgow and I can say it's always felt a darn sight colder down here in Peterborough than it does in Glasgow.

We use the thermal windscreen sheets over here, they work well. When we had the freezing rain 2 weeks ago, I just lifted the sheet off and it came away with 1.5cm thick ice and the screen was clear. Banged it against the house wall to knock the ice off, then packed it away in the car.
It is illegal to use salt on the pavements and driveway over here - it gets into the water table. We have to use grit and sand. Although salt is still allowed in emergency situations, like the freezing rain.
We've had a few centimetres of snow today.

As I understand it, from our supplier, there ain't all that much salt in "rock salt" any more. They use molasses and just about anything else they can get away with that's cheaper than salt. We use grit sand for the works roads and main access, but only because we have our own roadsweeper to clean up the mess later.
