National borders are becoming irrelevant, says John McDonnell | World news | The Guardian

I really wish Labour members would qualify their actually honest statements in the moment - they shouldn't have to, but we all know how it plays out. And it scares the life out of the chickensh1t members

Working equipment would be nice. Most of the new Type 45's are tied up with constant electrical failures.

Are they the ones that need their engines/power plants replaced?

Jack Straw to be 'denied knighthood and peerage' under Jeremy Corbyn | Politics | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/201 ... emy-corbyn

I really hope that's true, Straw's one of the dodgiest bastards New Labour produced. And that's saying something.

And I fully expect Rifkind to get his peerage since he was chief whitewasher for the security forces in the Lee Rigby murder.

Yep.
I know someone who works on one of them. Apparently they have to call in BAE systems evrytime something breaks. They're not allowed to fix it themselves...... which is bloody stupid.

Dear god. I didn't realise they'd PFI'd the warships as well. That could be exciting in a combat situation - having to log a call with the help desk while the ship burns.

Almost certainly. The military is very much of a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mindset. This is assuming they did it right in the first place of course. The embedded systems on a warship don't exactly have the same sorts of issues as someone connecting their laptop to the wifi in Starbucks.

"According to my screen your SLA is for a fix within four hours. What's the flight time of that exocet you've detected again?"

One of the arguments against Trident is exactly that. We're spending arrgh billion pounds on a weapon system that if we ever actually have to use it will have already categorically failed in it's primary function and will be essentially futile, whereas if we took the same massive pile of cash and spent it on conventional equipment and training, we'd probably have the best pound for pound armed forces on planet earth.

She's not wrong, and frankly it's been standard procedure for decades. For every expenditure you care to mention.

Former Labour defence secretaries fire broadside at Trident review | UK news | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016 ... son-hutton

Quote:
Robertson, who was defence secretary in the Blair government and later was Nato secretary-general, and Hutton, who was defence secretary in the Brown government, wrote they did not accept as legitimate “the use of spurious arguments and self-created ‘facts’ to argue against the planned new submarines”.

On the threat of cyber-attacks, they said the UK nuclear command and control system was not connected to the internet and once a submarine was submerged internet viruses could not enter the hull. They assumed that malware could not be introduced while the submarine was docked and that steps had been taken to ensure portals were sealed to prevent sabotage through the insertion of a thumb-drive.

Our nuclear power plants are apparently online, the security agencies say so, but our subs aren't? Also, what use is the C&C system if the sub itself has been hacked? (I honestly wouldn't rule that out, we are clearly that stupid since all our infrastructure is apparently online).
