We'd worked under the assumption that the bus would be outside when she finished, just like every other day. I only looked on the website to get a number, so I could call them to ask what was going on. Since they didn't answer, I can only assume that the teachers were busy playing on the trampolines or getting pished

Same here, although we only lived about 3-4 miles from the school, so we walked to and from school.

Amazon. I knew they'd stopped free delivery on items under £10 but this has increased to £20 and I didn't realise (not spent much given new house). Wanted to buy something for £19.99 and they'd charge £4.95 P&P.

I tend to buy something useful at that point - a phone cable, small LED torch, cheap boxcutters (I have these sort of things everywhere, so handy)...

Starting to feel like I work in a primary school.
A company brought in samples of their catering yesterday - a 'free lunch' trying to drum up business. We've had samples from them before a few years ago, it wasn't particularly good quality and one of the items gave me food poisoning, so there was nothing to draw us away from our current caterers who are brilliant and very flexible, helpful with dietary requirements etc.
So our morning receptionist sent out an email to the team inviting us down to sample and provide feedback. I sent a reply just saying that I wouldn't be joining the lunch as I've brought my own food and didn't want to risk another dose of something nasty, but that I'd be interested in people's feedback. A couple of other people who are also being careful with their food intake said something similar, so I suggested she invite the facilities and security teams to join in to get a good cross-section of opinion.
Apparently, I have now upset our receptionist because I 'gave people the idea' that the food would be bad, I 'wasn't even prepared to go and look at the presentation' (because we know that these companies can't 'scale up' the presentation from pretty arrangements for 5 people, to something equally stunning for 260 people) and now she thinks I am 'ganging up' on her with the afternoon receptionist who is also dieting.
FFS. It's not as though she prepared and provided the food, it's not her lunch, it's not a company she's affiliated with any way, of all the stupid and ridiculous things to be 'upset' about?!
I can't be doing with the drama llama, she seems to be getting worse the longer our boss is off sick (this is week 4 with at least 2 more weeks to go) paranoia is setting in and it's getting uncomfortable. I shall continue to be exactly as I always have been with her, suitably friendly (for someone I wouldn't choose to spend time with) and honest if my opinion is asked.

So my boss and the HOD are having a discussion about a new policy or something over the phone and have been for about a hour. My boss sits opposite me so I've been getting half of a conversation punctuated with irritating laughter for most of that time. There's a perfectly serviceable conference room next door with a phone and a PC.
Gah! Have some bloody consideration for the other poor sods you share an office with for once!

There weren't any free calls when I was at the DHSS. If you wanted a free conversation with us, you'd have to come in in person and spend some quality time in the waiting room with the junkies.

It's about 4°C outside at the moment, and my housemate, as usual, is sat with the living room window open in case the cat or the rabbit wants to go out. I'm so cold in my room right now, my knuckles are aching as I type this and I've got a video to cut.

A computer technician was in the office today, lovely helpful dude, installed a new computer quite happily and away he went. Brilliant.
As soon as he'd gone all the staff members started commenting about how weird he was, because he was short and had a slight speech impediment. Quote, 'There's something not right there.'
Apart from the sheer dickery of that sort of behaviour, this guy did a brilliant job in helping us out.
Why in fcuk's name in 2016 are people still so obsessed and horrified by other human beings?

OMJF what a complete pain of a night. We have a contract with a critical service down. A database has filled a drive, taking it offline. The third-party support only supports she software/database, but because the drive hosting the database has gone offline, they think it's an internal matter for us, but because the drive went offline due to database growth, our OOH on-call says it's the third-party problem. And I'm here playing go-between.

Oh yeah, to top it all off, I can't get the OOH on-call to speak with the third-party directly because there's been tension between the two in the past. I've just escalated the issue as we are going around in circles. I hate having to involve more people than is absolutely necessary in these things, but with this issue there was no other choice, sadly. Mark

This was going to go in the "what's on your mind" thread, but it's pissed me off today so it will go here.
I've recently been tinkering around with LiveCode. If you've not heard of it before, then it's a development environment that is more akin to BASIC in relation to the Obj C stuff in X Code and, I imagine, Microsoft's equivalent.
So, I have two projects in the go. One takes an image from a Theta camera and levels it. That's out in the wild, being used and it's open source because the free version of LiveCode requires it.
However, the other project is more involved. It's a stereo card maker. Import a left/right image pair, make adjustments, and it will export a print resolution image which is the right size for a Holmes card viewer. You can make various adjustments, and so far it works well.
So, I'm thinking that I could make some cash from this. LiveCode will create Mac, Windows & Linux versions, so that's all good. But in order to sell copies, I need to pay an annual subscription to LiveCode. Currently that's $499 a year. So, I'd need to sell quite a few each year to break even. Right now, though, I don't have $499 to throw at what could be seen as a vanity project.
The thing that bites is this: this year, that fee goes up to $599. In January 2017 it ups to $999. That's for a single seat developer, per year. If I pay my $499 now, that locks the subscription price to that for as long as the sub is active.
I doubt I'd recoup that larger fee annually at all, so it's either keep it to myself, abandon it, release as free and open source (I'm allowed to ask for donations - but I doubt I'd get anything really), or try to cobble it into Swift. Dev stuff in X Code requires a steep learning curve, and there is stuff I need to know that I've failed to find any answer to, probably because it's quite specialist.
So annoyed that something that might bring a bit of income has been shot down like this.
