Well, it’s all sounding good. Apart from the CBS streaming malarkey, that is. I hope we get it here on a channel that doesn’t hide it behind a paywall.

This was to be an animated series, but it obviously didn’t happen. However, there’s a site with artwork, story boards and other material that’s worth a poke around.

Not overly keen of the ship tbh although the uniform looks promising.

Paramount is currently in court, trying to stop the production of a fan-made crowdfunded Star Trek prequel film on the grounds it violates the studio’s ownership of the copyright. Launched in 2014, the film Prelude to Axanar covers the missions of the first Federation warship and takes place during the childhood of James T. Kirk but well away from him. The problem with all that is that it definitely shares a universe with every other Star Trek film and movie. The question becomes whether or not Star Trek is the universe or what happens within it.

https://www.inverse.com/article/11905-p ... -ownership

Now, this could be very interesting to watch.

Quote:
The Paramount lawsuit claims that this infringes upon “thousands of copyrights” and the Axanar team has asked the simple question: “Which ones?” Because Star Trek now exists over several different universes, time periods, and casts, it’s not so simple. The universe is so spread out, it is almost impossible to define what Star Trek actually is. To that end, the burden is on Paramount to explain what Star Trek is — in a legal sense.

Part of me wants the Axanar lot to win this - there’s a lot of am-dram Trek around that exceeds anything that SyFy or the Asylum can do. But some of it seems to cross the borders into semi-professional, and at this point I have to ask myself - if there is THAT much talent involved, then why not do something new? If you can build the sets, write the scripts, and do the CGI, then why riff of that? Why not use those talents for a new thing instead?

I recall a time in the late 1990s when the legal lot went after all the Star Trek fan sites, basically banning them from using any copyrighted material - yes, they said, you can do a Trek site, but don’t use any of our IP. Contrast with Star Wars, where the views of LucasFilms was “here’s the sand box - enjoy. Just don’t make any money out of it”. I believe that that’s true today, even after the Disney buy out.

How's this for a crazy idea? Instead of setting films in the Star Trek / Wars universes, why not make your own? These people have created ships, characters, uniforms and storylines so why not break away and make something new, and possible brilliant?

Aren't you both missing the point of a Fan Film?

They aren't allowed to make money from it, making it a labour of love. They're doing out of their passion for the material/universe/whatever.

I really hope they get to make it.

I thought they *were* doing this as a labour of love. Am I wrong? I may have missed something... But surely if the powers that be are being awkward, taking a concept and putting into a brand new universe would be just as good. Would the words "Inspired by Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek" annoy the lawyers?
