Of course, the strikers are saying this is about safety, not pay, as expecting to be paid a decent wage for a difficult and highly skilled job is now considered selfish. Surely expecting someone to work for free while people all around them are dying of cancer is only appropriate for the early stages of The X Factor. Sadly, Tories don’t understand why someone would stay in a job for decency and love when their mother was never around long enough to find out what language the nanny spoke.

I fear this is more than just about doctors and their new contract.I think this is an attempt to set a precedent. If Hunt wins this, in whatever fashion, the argument to other doctors, nurses, teachers, police, and any other form of public servant you can think of is “we did it to the doctors, now it’s your turn”.

Certainly I foresee that the entire NHS workforce will be affected. Hadn't thought about the impact on the entire public sector. Very disturbing to think about.

My wife's a teacher (actually, so we're my parents before they retired). Already, her head teacher is going to meetings about academies. So things are happening - even if those are exploratory missions.

I really get the feeling that the aim is to farm the public sector off to outfits like Serco, Capita, Group 4, Virgin Health. Then take nice directorships and retire, safe and sound in the Cotswolds with a nice health insurance scheme that only the deserving can afford.

Fewer people die in hospital at weekends, study finds
clicky

Jeremy Twunt's entire campaign to alter the junior doctors' contract was based on his (erroneous) belief that more people die at the weekend (which IIRC he measured from Friday to Monday!).
Quote:
NHS England said: “This analysis confirms the fundamental point that patients admitted to hospital at weekends are sicker, and need to have the right medical cover available, ensuring patients can see a senior doctor as soon as possible.”

So you need more senior doctors (ie consultant grade) and not more junior doctors at the weekend.

IFIFY.

You don't think the actual validity of the claim was ever at all important to Jeremy do you?

Nope. It was in the Tory manifesto. Twunt's job is to make it happen irrespective of what is truly going on. He doesn't really care about the junior docs or the NHS. He's just trying to deliver what DC wants.
