A 10" MacBook Air might be nice.

Yes I could see that being useful, especially if you could use iPod apps as well.

Ah, the rumour that will not die.

You could argue that the iPHone is Apple’s netbook. It’s small, does both WIFI and 3G connectivity. It has a browser.

My thoughts: it’s not - it IS more than a phone. I’d love a tablet Mac, and I have been toying with the idea of a ModBook at times, but those are so expensive I’d need to be really, really keen to have one. If there was an “official” Mac tablet, I’ll be in the queue.

I think that I would be getting one as well, but depending on the price, and my needs. I am sure that I could change how I worked to justify one.

Well, we’ve had WWDC this year, and Macworld in January won’t have an Apple keynote, so keep your eyes peeled for mentions of Special Events from Apple.

Then speculate the hell out of it!

Pouring a little more oil on this smouldering fire...

CultofMac.com have this piece up:

Quote:
Why Apple’s Tablet Will Rock
6:16 am, August 3rd, 2009, Leander Kahney

An Apple tablet concept with a 10-inch multitouch glass display. By Sean Mulvihill
Apple’s tablet, which may be on sale as soon as November, will be the best computer you ever bought. It will be better even than the beloved iPhone.

It will be an entirely new kind of computer that will usher in a new kind of computing.

It will be a horizontal iMac: a touch-screen computer that you use horizontally, in your lap or lying on the couch.

It will be a complete rethink of the computer for play, not work, and it use the original pointing device — your finger.

It will be really easy to use — a pleasure in fact, because it will be magical.
The tablet is Apple’s answer to the exploding netbook market, but it won’t be a piece-of-junk netbook. The last thing Apple will do is glom a touchscreen onto a low-cost laptop. It won’t even put a touchscreen on a regular desktop like an iMac. It makes little sense to touch an iMac’s screen when it is sitting upright. But drop the iMac into your lap, and touching objects on the screen makes perfect sense, and seems perfectly natural.

Instead, Apple will address what people DO with their netbooks — surf the Web, watch movies, video chat. It will be capable of some light productivity work, like instant messaging, email or writing blog posts. It’ll be lightweight, easily portable, and have long battery life.

You can read more about what's lead Leander into this merry meadow of marvel here: http://cultofmac.com/why-apples-tablet-will-rock
I have to say that many of the points he makes do make a lot sense.

Queue the people whinging:

"eurgh it will have finger prints all over it and you won't be able to see the screen"

"I won't buy a computer that doesn't have a hardware keyboard"

"glossy screens? Might as well have a mirror"

etc etc etc

p.s. I like the idea. I don't think it's something I would buy, but I think it's a good idea. You could get some awesome 2 player games on a device like that.

Nick, the fingerprints are the biggest problem.

On something like a 'phone, it is incredibly annoying (even worse are the fat smears once you've finished talking), but you can generally wipe the screen on your trousers/shirt etc. and it is good enough to carry on using it.

On a tablet or laptop sized screen, let alone a full sized display, it is another matter. They are incredibly distracting and I'd be forever cleaning the display - using current technologies.

That said, the demo 24" HP iMac clone with multi-touch display wasn't too bad, but the fingerprints were still clearly visible and distracting.

If they can crack that, then it could be a success.
