Fixed Tumble Dryer - belt had broken -cost £20 (and some scraped knuckles and swearing) rather than say £70 call out or £250+ (its condensing) for a new one

Not only does Metallica's new album go in at No.1 on amazon, it also knocks Now That's What I Call Music 95 (yes ninety [LIFTED] five) off the top spot!

Forgot the power supply for my laptop today. The battery has held out for the whole day, including watching some tutorial videos.

Mine holds out for between 8 and 10 hours, with the brightness turned up to 75%.

Always good when you find that out

Something similar happened many years ago to me

I was a Sys Admin in a large data processing / call centre

My boss had zero tech knowledge (and not really any people management skills either)

The servers we used (back in the 90’s) when they were delivered came with some CD’s with free bumph/ various standard drivers etc and she saw me unpacking a box one day. She asked if I had installed the CDs and I explained that I had not and why . She then ordered me to install the software on all of the sites servers. I refused and tried to explain again why this was not a good idea (our systems were quite bespoke and I would have brought he whole site down). She then promptly put me on disciplinary.

Naturally I appealed and in the end she was moved sideways to another job and I got a much better manager (Ok still no technical skills but knew enough to just leave me alone and to base any appraisals on system availability / user satisfaction)

I found out a year or so later that she had been demoted to a clerical grade and put on a warning for incompetence :)

It's great when stuff like that happens but it does make you wonder how they got the jobs in the first place?

The guy who kicked me out of one of my last jobs was facing prosecution for gross incompetence and illegal business practices.

The people who fcuked me about were moved sideways after their spell in the sun or they started becoming erratic and losing friends in the place. Meanwhile I went somewhere much nicer!

Some people interview really well. I had a complete and utter f***-trumpet as my line manager once - zero knowledge and no management skills, beyond making threats about disciplinary procedures when I disagreed with him and he couldn't get his tiny brain around my reasoning.

He made me redundant seven years ago, when we merged two regional offices - there was a lot of role duplication, and I knew my opposite number was a nice-but-dim type with no spine, so it was obvious I was going to lose out - my replacement didn't last a year, and f***-trumpet was out of a job shortly afterwards.

I bumped into the then commercial director a few years later, who said the guy was one of the worst appointments he'd ever made, but he interviewed very well.

Frustratingly, in the NHS, what appears to happen (particularly in management): a person who is competent at their job gets promoted and moves upwards. They continue to go up the greasy pole until they get to a position where they are inadequate and incompetent. They are then left at that stage rather than demoted to the previous position where they were competent.

We had a newly recruited receptionist who interviewed very well. They had previous experience at a GP surgery and their reference was very good. Unfortunately, neither the practice manager nor the head receptionist went into detail about the interviewee's last job. It turned out she worked largely in the background with paper work and had little patient contact. As a result, when faced with our usual patients (some who are vile to receptionists but "nice as pie" to doctors), she would routinely break down into tears and go off sick. I was the only one who suggested she be reviewed and dismissed as she was still in the trial period. No one else would back me. Consequently, she had long periods of sick leave with depression because of her work, so whilst we were paying her sick leave, we also had to pay for a temporary receptionist.
