Anyone had to do this before that can give me some pointers. Will be on either XP Pro or one of the Windows Server boxes that we have?

Excellent. That was my thinking, but wanted to check with someone more knowledgeable than me.

Don't forget to allow the port through the firewall

Not a windows solution, but in case anybody else is interested I use PureFTPd Manager on OSX and it's fantastic and very easy to use.

Ended up using FileZilla as one of the guys here knows it pretty well. Certainly does everything I need it to do.

I use filezilla as an ftp client and it seems to work well.
Let me know how the server version pans out

My vote goes to FileZilla server on Windows. I use vsftp on Kubuntu.

Yep, and forward those ports, especially if you want/need to support passive mode transfers. ;)

Any reason you don't use the built in server?

A bit late to say, but that's what I use too. It's easy, flexible and runs as a service. Can't think of anything else I'd need.

I do, it's a cocoa GUI for the built in server…

It's been fine so far. We are only going to be using it for testing throughput on the new wireless network that we are installing, so only got about three files on it.
