Similar to my other post, this is for a new Windows 10 laptop. My sister was previously using the antivirus that BT bundle for free with their internet and TV packages - which I think was a rebranded Sophos - but it brought the old laptop to a standstill so I don’t want that rubbish software anywhere near the new laptop!
At work, we used to use AVG and then they were bought out and rebranded as Avast - which seems OK, so I’m tempted to go with the free Avast and see if that offers enough protection. If not, then upgrade to the paid version at £49 a year
Happy to hear recommendations from you guys on what antivirus you use. Again, it will need to be easy to use with little to no intervention from my sister as she’s not a computer expert. And I live 100 miles away!
Thanks folks

AVG became bloated. Avast was better but it’s going the same way. Bitdefender’s supposed to be good.

Same here. No problems I've been aware of (yet). But then, that's what backup are for.

Thanks for the advice. My thoughts are that AVG are gradually moving to rebrand as Avast - at work, all our AVG CloudCare licences have moved to Avast automatically so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the AVG brand disappear soon.
Our I.T. support company has also recommended BitDefender and MalwareBytes so will also look at them too, but I’m still vearing towards Avast, mainly because we use that at work, although we’ve had a few issues lately with the update engine not working on a couple of PCs so it’s not without the odd glitch here and there.
By “the Windows Internal AV”, do you mean the built-in Windows Defender?

Yes, I've been using Windows Defender for the last 8 years, in its various forms.
I used to use BitDefender and Kaspersky, as well as GData at work.
At work, we generally use TrendMicro at the various companies I've worked at, although where I am now has just switched to Kaspersky. It is OK.
