My MacBook is a Duo model, which is 32 bit.

Apple haven't released the latest version of Java over Software Update, and the Sun website just tells me to use Software Update.

Does anyone know how I can get the latest version of Java onto my system?

Unless there is an ugly hack, you can't...And there may be a hack to do with X11?

The reason that Apple do their own Java (I'm told) is because things like Swing interacts a little too closely to Aqua, and so Apple take over and implement that bit...

Is it still on Java 1.5? If that's the case Apple are taking their sweet time about it, Java 1.6 has been out how long? At least two years I think?

Yeah, I've got some software which requires Java version 1.6

They won't give me the older version either, so now that I've updated I'm stuck with a useless piece of software.

I think I'll give it a miss though. Using this machine for lots of uni work at the moment so can't really afford to be playing around with stuff right now.

I had this problem with Limewire. I downloaded it, but it wouldn't work as it needed Java 1.6, which I couldn't seem to get on the mac. Seems odd to create a piece of software that can't work to me, but there you go. Just used Acqlite instead.

Well yes, but surely it's equally crazy for the developers of Limewire not to use all the features of a language? What's the point in having the language features if noone is going to develop software using them? There really does need to be a version of 1.6 released for everyone, or at least most people!

Limewire isn't a single cross platform file, it's (at least) packaged up into platform specific formats, so Windows gets an exe file and OS X gets a folder which will launch the GUI when executed...When you consider they do platform specific releases, it's a wonder how they tested or indeed compiled the OS X version...

For OS X, there is frostwire which is the same-but-different.

Oh ok, that's moronic. Still think we need a 1.6 release for OS X (How on earth do Apple expect new and interesting software to be written if they're blocking the new and interesting features???), but Limewire need to take the blame for their gaff as well.

I completely agree, I was fully expecting the update to come with Leopard, my guess is we won't see 1.6 until Snow Leopard, and it may not get back ported...Either that or they've given up and are waiting for the open Java stuff to take over...

One major enhancement to the API is file handling in Java 6. I really wanted to use some stuff for my coursework last year involving file extensions and file types, in the end I couldn't include it because I was developing on a Mac and the app was being evaluated on a Mac...

I need it to run a piece of software. I downloaded the update and it gives me a wonderful error message saying that the application can't run because I don't have the latest version, but the previous version which I was using before is no longer available.



So I'm stuck.

I remember when MS did their own version of Java. They got taken to court and forced to stop; which was a shame because it was very much faster than the version from Sun.

That's one of the perks of being the dominant player in the OS market.
