Hey, i'm not technically "back" as such as i've not got internet. I came to uni to check some emails...

Anyways. After having my PC in storage for 3 weeks i've got it back out only to find that there's a horrible buzzing noise coming from the PSU (Even when powered off) and disturbingly the second monitor won't work.

The monitor works when loading up (I get BIOS displayed on both screens and the vista loading bar on both screens) but after that it's down to one.

Windows says that both are working correctly.

Anyone know what I can do? I should have interwebs tomorrow so i'll check back then!

If the PSU is buzzing I would suspect... the PSU.

If the second monitor isn't working it may be that the PSU is not delivering enough power to the graphics card... is it one card with 2 outputs, or two cards?

Buzzing psu when off usually means there's something living in it.
You might need to reinstall the gfx drivers for the 2nd screen (I had a similar problem today)

It's Optimus Prime...

Or a fly...

Oh, is the power cable pushed all the way in? It could be it's a bit loose...

If it was a crackle then that's the obvious one.

Could be moisture in the psu from storage (those places are never heated)

Strangely...

The power supply is doing exactly the same thing in another computer in the house that was in storage. Both computers were very well packaged (quite airtight, pretty warm room tbh).

Also two amplifiers and a lamp are doing the same.

I'm going to try the graphics drivers now, thanks all >.<

I reckon it might be something to do with the house.

My reasoning -

All four desktop computers in the house are making the same noise from their Power Supplies.

My PowerMac G5, which was not in storage, is making the same noise from it's Power Supply.

I've got the dual-monitor thinger all set up though =)

That's quite disturbing. I'd urgently invest in a surge protector - a decent one with equipment guarantee. It'll be interesting to see if it buzzes.

Are you absolutely positive the noise is coming from your equipment and not from the mains socket or maybe an extension lead? That type of noise is often hard to pin-point. If it is comming from the socket, then you need to get it checked immediately before it starts a fire.

If it is noise on the mains, then it's likely to be high frequency interference from other dodgy equipment. The most common cause of this is bad dimmer switches or fluorescent tubes, but another faulty PSU elsewhere in the house might do it. Try powering off everything in the house including the fridge, and switching off all the mains trips except for the ring you're plugged into. Preferably do this in daylight, and warn other people first

Definitely the PSUs - Ear pressed right up to them.

Also the Mac is making a regular high pitched electrical sounding beeping, very faint but easy to hear once the other computers are off. About twice every three seconds.

Epic task checking all that equipment, i'll have to do it once back from work =)
