Advent 6651 Entertainment Laptop http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?page=Product&source_id=aw&sku=007582Cost is £400. Just wondering what ya'll think of this laptop. Would be for sisters uni, she wouldnt be doing anything graphical (maybe cropping pictures in word ). Ussually I'd shy away from PCWorld, however she is very picky with her touchpads, needs one that is not a built in part of the chassis... she tried this ones and liked the pad. Things I like: Good screen size Good CPU speed Far bit of RAM A reasonable HDD (without being excessive) OK Price Home premium (meh, itll be Windows 7 sometime ) Things I dont...: Its PC World Advent... mm china- tbf its always china, but this one moreso Repairs are... PC World Not many reviews around... Its PC World. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions, experiences with Advent brand stuff or other suggestions for Laptops. It'll just be for uni work, so needs to be fairly light, large screen and work (and have an ok touchpad ) Cheers, Alex.

I bought a laptop from PC World in 2001. It is still working, although the battery packed in last year...
I'm guessing the display is only 1440x900, that is too blocky for me, but if she gets on with it, fine (my current machine has 1680x1050 on a 15.4" display, which is very nice.
The rest of the spec matches what we currently use in the office (although generally we have 1.8Ghz or 2.0Ghz Pentium Ds, so the laptop would actually outpace our desktops a bit... They are a little sluggish, but they are okay for general office work.
Maybe I'm a little snobbish, but I'd like to see Core 2 Duo on the case, but for the type of activity you describe, it is probably more than adequate.

Looks alright to me for the money. I know what you mean about PC World but sometimes you've gotta dance with the devil!
Good allround spec for Vista and the 17" means watching DVD's will be much more confortable than on a 14-15.4. Do you know what res it supports? I'd be suprised if it only went upto 1440x900, seems low for such a big screen (laptop wise).
When you get it just strip all the crap off that comes pre-installed. I got the missus a cheap Tesco Fujitsu Siemens, similar spec to this but with a smaller screen, and once I'd clean it up it booted up in half the time.

A lot of the bargain basement 17" laptops seem to use it. The middle class 1680x1080 and the media ones 1080p and the good ones 1920x1200. That said, I love the 1680x1050 on my 15.4" laptop. Just about right, v. portable, but you get a reasonable amount on the screen.

I think it is only 1440x900. Though it seemed standard to me Being a desktop user who uses 19" at a lower res than that. Does a higher res on a laptop make the words smaller? Would've assumed it would.. or vice versa?

Yes, it makes it smaller, although you the higher DPI means that Vista (and XP to a lesser extent) should scale the fonts up.
That said, 15.4" with 1680 or 17" with 1920 is the "comfortable" level for me. I hate 19" 1280 and 22" 1680 monitors (and the 24" 1080p to a lesser extent), the text is too large and feel as though the images are less "focused".
I have 2 24" 1920x1200 screens at home, the text is lovely and crisp, but at work they messed up a bit and bought a 1080p, the text looks comical next to my work laptops 15.4" 1680x1050!
