I heard the figure of 19 pounds floating around for a while.

Not sure what they actually announced in the end, though.

Just to wander even further off topic and into the undergrowth, Snow Leopard is the number one pre-order (sorry Heather) on Amazon.com.
Clicky.

So then, you admit that the full price for Windows is too much?

If Win 7 can only beat OS X when it's at a promotional price point, what does that say for Redmond's pricing strategy?

Not for retail, it is a similar price compared to Vista. I was saying at that price point, MS employee or not I will buy it as an impulse purchase as it is below the psychological 'barrier' of a high end purchase that is over £50

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_v ... provements

£30 for that (If you own 10.5, otherwise you have to fork out more...at least with win7 you can upgrade from Vista SP2/1 XPSP3/2/1) ..... I'd take a free service pack for those kind of features thanks.

If it's like Vista upgrade you can do a clean install on it, worst case is you pre-order it, it's upgrade and you can't do a clean install, then you send it back under the DSR

Win situation is you get full retail (you will get 32 & 64 bit as standard) :)

Is a SP going to slim your OS from 6GB to 3GB as well?

If it's a preloaded one probably
If not vLite does that ANY time I want to, Also as a PC user I can easily upgrade my hard drive :)

And we PC users aren't exactly in a time where hard drive space is such a valuable commodity, at around 6p per gb (based on a 1tb 3.5" SATA HDD being £60 currently) you can't really object to having a larger install for better performance, unless you can't upgrade your hard drive...

And that, ladeez n gennelmen, is why MS software is getting a reputation for bloat. ;)

I can install xp on under 512mb if I want, bet your Mac OS from that time wouldn't take up such little space
Win 7 was around 6gb without trimming so not a huge amount of difference....

I suppose because I have my music ripped from my cds in a high bitrate in a lossy format I must love bloated music over 128kbps encoded mp3.... :P

It's horses for courses, as we both know, but the new OS will be Intel-only optimised, no legacy PPC code and it'll still be 3GB, unlike the 6GB I'm running today.
The first commercial OS X, 10.1, was asking for 1.5GB and 128MB of RAM. Which was pretty much what a standard XP SP1 install asked for.
;)

So Apple only have to support Intel CPUs

MS have to support Intel, AMD, Itanium, server spec cores and goodness knows what else in terms of architectures

Explains a lot of the extra install :) (not to mention built in hardware support for pci/pci-e devices etc)

Yeah, I think it's the 'curse' of being in MS's shoes. The wide hardware availability and choice has it's cost, as well as a degree of flexibility. I'm sure if MS were to only support, say, Dell or Sony, it'd be a much slimmer install.

Either way, there's new toys around the corner for everyone!

Apart from me, who's gonna have go Intel at some point now. ;)

From what I've read, as I'm running XP, even an upgrade will require a clean install. But I have to do it from the XP desktop  :?

So even though it's "clean" it's no use to me, as I don't wanna be formatting, then installing XP, then installing 7, every time I wanna clean up. Ruuubish!

DSR? You mean I've got 14 days or whatever?

Well that is what happens when you skip a release, saying that it's not all bad as you should really do a clean install anyway (and you could just boot the disc and do it)

Well as said before if you catch a pre order now you should get a full retail licence

7/14 days from receipt of the goods, not when you ordered
