I can't afford to buy a £20,000 car outright, new or used, and I can get cracking lease deals on new cars. I have the same situation with my current car, which I will be handing back to the lease company at the end of the year. The lease includes servicing, repairs, tax, tyres and exhausts, all for a single monthly charge. Sorry for any confusion. Peter.

High end Toyota Verso?
Why so specific about the headlights?
EDIT
You have to add leather as an option.

VW Tiguan, CR-V or RAV4 at a push. You'll be lucky to get a decent spec with that budget though. There are deals to be had, but I suspect they will go to people buying vehicles outright.

Honda Civic FTW. The only thing you may find not to your liking is the driving position - it's a bit low. And the rear visibility - you can't see much, but it does have huge rear view mirrors to compensate. Oh, and the ride quality - it's 'firm' (Firm as in remove your dentures before driving) Perhaps maybe the build quality - mine rattles a bit especially on cold mornings. Ah, forgot to mention the i-Shift semi automatic box - can be a bit of a bugger to get away from the lights with your dignity intact. Meh, details... But it has a HUGE boot, and is one of the most fun cars I've driven (1.8 iVtec petrol engine) - it goes like stink and the big fat Bridgestones anchor it to the road. Go on, you know you want to...

If you can get one, the Freelander 2.2 TD4 won compact 4x4 in What Car last year, but may be a bit above your budget. Other than that, the Tiguan 2.0 TDI S.

My brother's girlfriend has a 2-3 year old CR-V, it had a nice ride, when I was over for mums funeral. Plenty of legroom in the back.
Personally, I'd look at an estate (we have a dog), I don't like SUVs, because they have very poor aerodynamics and fuel consumption, compared to "normal" cars.

Another one that's just crossed my mind - the Ford Kuga.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll certainly look into them I can't believe how much manufacturers charge for a built-in satellite navigation system. On my current car, I paid £1,500 extra for this system, yet some manufacturers are charging significantly more. Peter.

Also if you're getting built in sat-nav, check it recognises full UK postcodes. Not all do.

Maybe I'm being a bit dense here, but I've never had a satellite navigation system that uses postcodes. On my current one, I type the town/city, then the road name and finally the property number. Isn't that how they all work? The system on my current Nissan Qashqai is amazing, however they've changed it on the new model, so I have no idea how good it is. Mine is currently right at eye level, but they've mounted the new one right down by the gear stick which makes no sense Peter.
