I'll have to play the "poor, impoverished student" card to explain my lack of shiny-newness in my camera (8-p) It does mean I'll be able to claim that my inferior pics are down to not having as good a camera, though (8-p)

You know that we know it's all about the photographer and not his equipment (ooo-errr). Mark

I put it this way: I had always intended on getting a full-frame sensor DSLR, but budgets wouldn't allow. I continue to use my smaller sensor camera, and get amazing images from it, learning all the time. Eventually, I will get the "better" camera, and will know how to use it to get "better" pictures.
But at the end of the day, it's not the tools you use but how you use them.

I was talking to my missus last night about the disability benefits I receive each week. We had an agreement whereby she used the money for day to day stuff until September whereupon it would be returned to me in full. I suspect a 70-200 F4 L IS USM is on the cards but will settle for a second hand F2.8. 1.4x convertor is a done deal 5D Mk II is it Heather??? There's a chap I know who has an e-bay shop but if you e-mail him he will give you a cheaper quote. All the pro's use him so that must say something??? Let me know if you want his address...... Fair point, but as I stand beside my mate with his 5D Mk II and 300mm F2.8 L IS USM prime lens, I just know when he presses the shutter button he's going to have an immediate advantage in quality over my 40D and 100-400 L IS USM combo Al

Without being overly personal (and feel free to tell me to mind my own business) what kind of thing is keeping you both awake?

It's going to be either really loud death metal on her iPod or snoring. My monies on the death metal

Neither but some of that classical poo she likes can be quite invigorating... The wife (some call her Mary) has a trapped nerve in her lower back causing some serious leg twitching. Well, twitching would be an understatement as it has spread to full body. Neither of us get a good sleep unless one of us vacates the bed Good news is that she goes to Physio at the end of the month... Al PS - there's nothing overly personal that can't be discussed on X404

Thanks, Al. I may well be in touch, but it won't be for a little while. We have a bathroom and various other expenses to cover at the moment. Meanwhile, I shall continue to lust after the same lens you are likely to be getting as well. It's becoming a chicken-and-egg situation. I'd need the lens to match the new camera, so it ought to come before the camera, if you see what I mean... Now, which internal organ can I sell, I wonder...

Well, glad to hear she's got some help on the way and that you're being understanding about it. Here's hoping you get back to using the bed for what it was made for soon. That's good to know. I'm not renowned for my subtlety so I occasionally remember to check first

Is your employer helping fund you through your degree?

Heather, Yeah, I think Apple are ganging up on me. Maybe I shouldn't have tweeted that T-Mobile needed 5 weeks to deliver the iPhone... Hmm, the documents from T-Mobile say that I should download the latest version of iTunes, to stop my iPhone crashing! And I double checked, there aren't any more updates. I have removed all of the apps from the machine, apart from a couple I "need" train timetables, AroundMe, iDisk, Remote, Stanza... See if that makes a difference, although every time it has locked up, it has either been sleeping on the home screen or sleeping in the iPod player, so I don't think it is a rogue 3rd party app. Edit: Just bricked itself again! Doesn't seem to have anything to do with the apps, I haven't used any of them yet!
