Hi all,
A friend at work has asked for advice on migrating from his current MacBook running 10.6 and iLife '08 to a new MacBook which will be running 10.6 but iLife '09.
What exactly does migration assistant help with? Does it copy over all your applications and application settings (library files), plus all users data? If so will it distinguish that iLife '09 is installed and upgrade any files that are needed to be updated? Or would it overwrite iLife '09?
In essence, is migration assistant all encompassing, yet intelligent in the way it puts files on to the new system?
Many thanks, Ben

I must have done this but for the life of me I can't recall the detail.
I am certain that you won't get iLife 09 overwritten though. There are numerous options when you run the migration. Make sure you check them out as it is easy to click past them.

Sorry, I've been installing machines with Solaris 10 update 6 today. He has a MBP with 10.5, and is getting a new MBP with 10.5

Thanks CC. I guess he can do a dry run is needs be...He will have the install disks for the new MBP so can revert to a clean system if needs be... He's very techy and a big geek, so he should be able to figure it out... Cheers CC and Mark

AFAIK, it copies everything to the right location, and you can exclude any files/folders that you don’t want copied. Not much info on Apple’s site, as far as I can see.

In a similar vein, I'm going to be migrating my old G4 to a new (well refurb) MacPro, and was wondering about software that needs activation (eg CS2, Quark Xpress 6 and my iTunes account).
Do I de-activate on the old machine before using migration assistant, and then re-activate on the new machine?
Or does migration assistant take the activation information across safely..?
Anyone know..? Thanks!

It won't deactivate software, you'll need to do that separately if you need to (such as iTunes). It will, however, carry across all the registration information and your software will launch just as it did on your old Mac.

Great, thanks! I'll deactivate before migrating across then.

There is a unix command where you can just copy the contents of your home folder if you wish. If anyone needs more info let me know.

Would be a better solution, the 'p' after the 'r' preserves the ACL's (file owners and permissions), drag and drop would possibly change these... Caz, what was the command? I'm intrigued...

You know, Apple went with Unix, but that doesn't mean I want to know about it.

+ 1 It's the whole point of owning a Mac. Otherwise, I may as well run Linux.
