lol So my home server install went great, once in windows it wouldn't detect my hard drives, so I went to update the drivers but it didnt detect my Ethernet drivers - how the fook do you get drivers now of days without the internet!!! so I moved on to my main machine - and no word of a lie but I have attempted to install windows 7 about 30 times most times after the initial black loading screen I got either a bsod or a black screen saying a critical file is missing (such as ntfs.???). The first time I managed to get windows to install completely I ended up with a corrupt explorer.exe, and the second time I got some random error on first boot, every couple or reboots it will hang, and if it doesn't it hangs after about ten minutes anyway! URGH, computers suck.

I would try a Live Linux CD and see if you can connect to the net to download the drivers and either burn a new Windows 7 DVD or, (if that doesn't work) download another image, as it sounds like a corrupt disc/image file to me. Hope this helps, John.

Thats what I thought (but I haven't even removed the CD from the drive and it installed fine on my previous setup!) the leads all appear fine. I have memtest86 on disk and the latest bios update to see if that solves the issue, I'll try to burn it to disk again, and if that fails I'll try and do an install from a usb dirve (not that I have a 4gb drive like!) Thanks Ross

Try another cable to the dvd drive. Bluescreens during installations are usually cable or dvd drive related.

good idea, might try plugging into a different IDE port on the mobo (assuming there is more than one! Doesn't even have firewire:-[ )

You might be happy to know that the issue appears to have been the mobo bios - only thing I changed and had a perfect install straight after.
I'm a very happy man now!
