It just seems to be getting a little bloaty these days. I've used it for years, but just done a completely fresh install.
Recommendations for something free that's halfway good?

I use AntiVir, or Auntie Vera as I generally refer to it. It's highly rated, and I find it quite painless to live with.
It does pop up once a day with a big "You really should buy the super cool version!" notice, but compared to the grief some other AV has put me through I find that very easy to live with.
I might change to Avast one day, but probably not until I do a rebuild.

The free version of AntiVir is about the best free solution in tests, although the cash for the pro version is worth it, in terms of recognition accuracy.

I switched from AVG to AntiVir some time ago. It's very good and a lot lighter than AVG

Sounds like a good reason not to get it. I want my virus scanner to be serious, Damnit! You can disable the huge notifier in the Free Anti-Vir but looking at this page http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disabl ... ir_nag.htm I have seen a couple of postings on other forums/blogs that this also disables any warnings you would have got if you got infected but I can't say for certain if that is true or not. _________________My Flickr PageNow with added ball and chain.
