It runs an Apple OS and is made by Apple.

I know this isn't a hard reset but may help someone .. to force quit the active application, hold the power button until the red slider appears, then release and hold down the home button. Seems to work. Didge

You can enter a different thing if you hold down the Home and On/Off button but keep holding them for about 30 seconds to a minute. Not sure if that's hard reset but when flashing the phone that's the first thing you have to do.

The problem was, the iPhone wasn't responding to any key presses...
The Home + On/Off should normally respond in about 6 second, but I left them pressed for a couple of minutes.

Looks like it was a corrupted file.
The repair service returned the iPhone, for the second time, unrepaired! So I tried a fresh install - not restoring from the backup and it seem to be working at the moment. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it continues to work.

Won't that make it rather difficult to use?

Wait, you didn't try that before sending it to be repaired?

It was bricked, I couldn't re-install it!
When I got it back the first time, I just plugged it into my iMac and let iTunes do its stuff...
This time I ignored the backup of all the settings and data that was on the iMac and rebuilt the machine from scratch.

You should take a back up (through iTunes) before doing the update.
