More to the point, can't they afford someone with a passing familiarity of photo retouching? That's shockingly bad.

It's more likely the designers wanted a more youthful image, and the man with grey hair was simply too old and wrinkly to be cool and hip.

Actually, you are right. This is photo editing on a tight budget.

It's more likely the Polish demographic is heavily dominated by white people.... Either way, old news is old I put it on the subliminal advertising thread yesterday

Given that Microsoft use the original image in regions other than Poland, I would say it is a poor attempt to change the image to be suitable for the target market - why didn't they just take a new picture?

If I had the time I'd replace the black guys face with that of the Linux penguin, but I don't, so you'll have to use your collective imaginations... Or better still replace the guys head with...

I always find this sort of thing funny. Why didn't they take several photos originally with several variations of ethnicity? That way they could choose the most suitable one for each country. eg. The poster for Japan would have mostly asian people, America could have an mix of black and white, and Europe could have a mix of white and southern asian. No dodgy editing, no racism, more staff get to be in adverts and adverts suitable for each country.

Who was it that said "All publicity is good publicity"? Am I being cynical or do you think that MIcrosoft are saying "Yay! People are talking about us again!"

They probably haven't commissioned the picture, that's why. I'll bet it's a piece of stock photography that some photog's carefully composed to show a well based collection of ages, race and gender in a business setting, with a hope of flogging to some company who wants to be seen as doing the right thing. Even though it's completely transparent in the first case, then badly retouched in the second.

This is the second time in 48 hours that I have admitted to reading the Daily Mail, but they made the same observation as you. ClickyPeter.
