Doesn't the iPhone play normal MP3's as ring tones?
Find a song you like in your music collection and edit it down to the bit you want with Audacity.

I think it uses a different file extension for ringtones, .m4r is what they need to be, then just copy to the Ringtone section of iTunes and sync with the handset.
After that the newly created ringtone will appear in the selectable list.

You can't directly use MP3's but there are a couple of mac apps (and I assume there are windows ones too) that will allow you to chop a chunk out of an MP3 file and fiddle with the metadata to make iTunes think it's a ringtone so it can then be uploaded to an iphone.

Such as this.

It's all to do with the file extension. No need to fiddle with the metadata at all.

Trust Apple not to make things user friendly. They think their products are above making things easy for their customers.

Ok... how long before someone suggests that we make a law forcing all iPhone owners to have a "ringtone" that is just a persons voice screaming "LOOK AT ME I HAVE AN IPHONE!!!!!!!" repeatedly.

You can convert MP3s to ringtones in GarageBand. Just drop the MP3 into GarageBand from iTunes, select the chunk of song you want as a ringtone and upload it back to iTunes. Seemples.

Where did you get the TARDIS noise Tim?

Knowing Tim, he probably has his very own fully functional TARDIS and he just set his iPhing to record whilst on a trip.

;) :P :etc:

I have a 4-port TARDIS USB hub which, when you press a button (the square police notice on the front door) it makes the sound, I simply recorded it on miPhone copied it to the comp and made the necessary adjustments.
