It was in a 1 series BMW. The htc just couldn't get a signal in the car. I had to open the window and hold it outside for 30 seconds or so. Once it had picked up a signal, I could use it in the car, when it was against the window...

Yep, but it must let a minimum amount of light through (I forget the limit) or it's illegal.

70% for windows IIRC, but I thought it was illegal to tint front windscreens.

Something to add to the 'what i learned today' thread I suppose.

It depends on what you call tint... We've not had a car since the early 70s (a Mk1 Escort), which didn't have a tinted front windscreen.

If you look around, I would expect over 90% of cars on the road today probably have tinted windscreens - generally to block UV waves and heat reflection. Tinting != blacking out!

Most tints on windscreens, you will see a slight green tinge, sometimes blue ISTR, but generally you won't notice it when looking at the car from the front. Look at it from above, you might see an iridium or rainbow effect.

The restriction on tinting windscreens is much tighter, generally it has to let so much visible light through, and IIRC they must let all of certain types of light through.

The tinting is more what it lets out. It can be tinted, but it cannot obstruct a policeman's or speed camera's view into the vehicle...

What is excessively tinted glass?
Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 as amended specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows.
The limits are:
Motor Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985:
The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.
Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, then the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.

Thanks for that Prof.

The summary is : you must be able to see out of the vehicle, even in bad weather, without the windscreen or front windows obstructing your view - and police etc. must be able to see into the vehicle?

Like you, Dave, I suspect most cars since the 70s have a slight tint in the windows. The Americans liked a slight green tint since the 50s, and I'd guess that most cars actually have a slight green tint all round for the last few decades.

Well TomTom are being so slow getting the car kit to market that I've just ordered a stand-alone unit from eBuyer.

It's a shame, as I was holding out for the TomTom but I need a sat-nav for work and I just can't wait any longer.

Well done TomTom.

How are you getting on with it?

A review here put the MobileNavigator from Navigon ahead of the TomTom, but said both of them needed improving before they could be really recommended as a replacement for a standard satnav.

Given the price (including the car kit, the phone and the TomTom software), I find it a bit of a cheek that things like HD Traffic are missing - especially given that the iPhone is constantly connecte to the internet, so could easily retrieve the information... :?
