OK, so I want to transfer my music library from my Mac to the PC. Now, I can't drag and drop my iTunes folder to an external Hard Drive because Windows flat refuses to recognise the partition (because Windows is a waste of space), and OS X refuses to write to an NTFS partition.

I've also tried backing up my iTunes library to disc and tranferring it that way, 7 DVDs later and 4GBs of data has mysteriously gone missing.

So, what else can I try?

Can you network the two machines and do it that way? Might not be the best given the amount of data you want to move though.

What did you format the hard drive partition as? Reformat it on the Mac and select DOS as the format. That'll make it FAT-32 and should be useable on both Windows and Mac.

I haven't got a crossover cable here unfortunately, only patch cables.

I'll try the FAT 32 solution and get back to you.

I think that there is more than one way to do this.

1) Apples way. Though it might be o.k. if you don't have too many songs.

2) The Geek way.

Both described here

Apple's way sucked (4GBs of missing data, WTF?)

Trying another way as we type.

I usually synchronise over the network, but also keep a backup on my external 250GB USB drive (FAT32, you will need OS X or Linux to format it, Windows refuses to format a drive with Microsoft's FAT32 format, if the drive is over about 50GB  ).

You can use NTFS, but it is generally more hassle that it is worth on an external drive shared between different machines, which aren't part of the same domain.

Are you absolutely certain you need a crossover cable?

I'm not sure about your PC, but the Mac will almost certainly have an auto-sensing ethernet socket and won't care if it's crossover cable or not.

Most semi-modern PCs should auto sense as well.

Fair enough, will just use the ethernet cable in future. As it happens, I sorted it out with an external HDD and using OS X to format the drive as FAT.

Macs know about such things and can adjust. Use your patch cable. You should be fine.
