Didn't mean to cause any upset Caz. You are, of course, completely free to have an opinion. I just think that if that's the way you feel about The Wire, and in particular the final season, you've missed the point of the show.

As for the ping gag, I'm not nearly as much of a geek as you and Mark!

Can you tell me what the point was then? Saves me trawling through the last 8 hours of it hehe.
I saw the McNulty guy on tele and he said it was to highlight the lack of police resources. Well they could've done that in a couple of hours not 62 hours!

And no you did not upset me at all.

*puffs chest out in pride to be thought of as geeky as Mark*

Back on topic, advertising has killed TV for me. In the last year, I have not watched anything on "real" TV. iPlayer, DVDs or nothing. It has left me with time to play with Ubuntu...

Oh. dear.

*looks at ping gags, only just barely understands. hangs head in shame.*

Damn, you guys are unbelievable!

The Wire is a lovingly crafted mirror for Americans to look at. It shows them the real deal about what is going down (not just in Baltimore) across the country in inner city areas. The characters are full of depth, life (and death in some cases). The stories are rich and vibrant and the arc of the whole show is one of reality. Perhaps, you prefer more "escapist" television? I'm not sure. If you do, that's of course your choice. It's just that this show is one of the best ever created, because it's unique and has achieved something no other television show has managed to do. To make people think, whilst making them laugh, cry, feel anger on such an epic scale across 5 seasons is unparalleled. It's more than merely entertainment. It's brain and soul food.

For someone who was just commenting on someone being arrogant, that statement is staggeringly hypocritical.

What I said, meh.

Miami Vice did that twenty years ago, when Zito was murdered with an overdose, when Gina was raped, when Sheena Easton got shot, I cried buckets then I was angry, I wanted revenge. Izzy marino and the Nugs never failed to make me laugh, there was a particularly good epsiode called Made For Each Other where the comedy duo of Zwitek and Zito (before he was murdered with an overdose, obviously) did an Odd Couple pastiche which was both touching and funny.

I forgot to mention as someone else already did, Edward James Olmos as Castillo was the best cop show boss ever, he was a f u c king ninja, I wish he'd played Adama as a ninja, now that would've been the s h i t.

The Wire is not a cop show. As I've said before - missed the point.

I take it all back (except about Miami Vice) The Wire is awesome, I'm part way through the second series and am totally addicted.

I love the way the creators have taken the genre conventions and clichés of the cop show and manage to incorporate them into a beautifully crafted, wonderfully acted and exceptionally well written piece of entertainment that is a pleasure to watch and doesn't play down to the lowest common denominator.
