There are some politicians who get into politics for the good of the people (Tony Benn, Bruce George and Clare Short spring to mind) but unfortunately, many others get into it for the power trip. Removing the whip from all parties would go a long way to improving the relationship between the members of the public and members of parliament. I still find it odd that I effectively "employ" an MP to represent my views, and he has to defer to a representative of his political party instead....

Without party politics nothing would ever get done, government would be weak and the country would lack a sense of direction. It would also spook the markets something terrible. For the record, my MP does a fabulous job and doesn't abuse his expenses. He probably gets annoyed with the frequency that I write to him, but I'm often pleased with the outcome. If he does disagree with me - he does so politely and outlines his reasons in detail. I only hope his replacement is half as good (he's stepping down to spend more time with his family). The MP for Cardiff North however (the wife of the leader of the Welsh Assembly no less), is beyond useless. I'd vote Tory just to get her ass booted out onto the street.

The most sinister bit in this new legislation is that in addition to people's criminal convictions disqualifying them from working near children "Police Intelligence" can be used. Ignoring the oxymoronic nature of that category I'm rather exercised by what "Police Intelligence" might be in this context. If I run into a cop-shop denouincing X as a "paedo" is that "Police Intelligence"?
Similarly, if I were to be banned from working near kids (and my professional reputation ruined as a consequence), do I get to know what this "Police Intelligence" is and who grased me up, and why? Does the Data Protection Act apply: i.e. can I demand to see whatever "record" I might have? Can I insist that it has any inaccuracies removed? And so-on....

What makes it worse is that such accusations can be completely unfounded. Someone who holds a grudge against you could completely [LIFTED] up your career, and you don't even have the luxury of suing them for damages in the civil courts because the Police won't tell you who said what!
