On a slightly different note one series I think would have gotten better with a 2nd series is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. So wish they'd have made another series!

That show went down the toilet halfway through the first series. Right about the episode that complained about focus groups ruining TV shows iirc. Up to that point they were shaping up for another 8 series of will-they-won't-they sexual tension just like West Wing, afterward they had Chandler Bing and Josh Lyman just making complete dicks of themselves.

Someone should also tell Sorkin to stop chatting up ex girlfriends by basing characters in TV shows on them and making other characters tell them what goddesses they are. It's creepy and sick.

Wow. Surprised at that. There's not enough TV for smart people and this was one of those shows. I suppose you could boil it down to that, or you could look at the nuance and amusing writing. I chose the second. Each to their own though.

+1
It's getting better, but there's still not enough of it.

Babylon 5 had 3 excellent series then SciFi Channel (IIRC) borked it all up by forcing them to do the rest of the original story arc in season 4 (which was very good as a result but probably not all it could have been due to compression).

It was TNT - they wanted space sex.

Doh. I was looking at what I had written and thought Sci Fi Channel was wrong. They did buy the series eventually though didn't they? And it was SciFi who screwed up Crusade to the extent that JMS told them to go fun themselves. Sideways. With barge pole. And SciFi wanted basically exactly the same thing TNT did, but even more so..

It was all TNT - even Crusade. The SciFi channel was after reviving it with a Rangers based series, and produced a TV film To Live and Die in Starlight as a pilot. 9/11 and some idiotic scheduling killed it (never schedule against a big football game in the USA).

In the UK, the SciFi channel showed the whole series unedited (bits has been cut for Channel 4), and even had an unclothed Claudia Christian trailing it. IIRC, saying something like “Babylon 5 as you have never seen it before”.

Oh, lordy. Here it is on YouTube.

"Lost" and "Heros" both went totally crap too quickly, to the extent that I coined the notion of "Lost" being the model for all new series in that it was completely vague and inconclusive allowing it to drift off in any direction at any time and never ever conclude. True to fdorm "Heros" went right down this same street. This isn't a problem with something like "CSI" \ "The Wire" \ "Law and Order" where the format is simply a mis en scene and each episode is a complete story in itself.
"Lost" "Heros" and "Battlestar Galactica" all start off as needing a resolution to the original idea, and the longer the makers drag it out the less satisfactory it all becomes, no matter how good individual bits are, we all crave a resolution to the story.

A great series that was BETTER than expected was "The Shield".

I'm currently working throgh the "Battlestar Galactica" (remake) and thoroughly enjoying it, safe in the knowledge that it has an end in sight.

Heros did lose it's way very quickly. I dropped out when series two was so poor.

Scooby Doo took it's time to nosedive but did so pretty quickly after Scrappy joined the crew.

See above - To Live and Die In Starlight was the pilot for the series that never was.

The current series of Entourage is not half as good as the previous ones. Not sure why. Maybe not enough of Ari Gold throwing strops.

Just re-watched it, I stand corrected. I've seen it maybe 7 or 8 times and I'd never noticed the "To Live and Die in Starlight" episode title... :?
