There is growing controversy in Brazil over the arrest of an Italian tourist held after kissing his eight-year-old daughter in public.

Is this a case of a well intentioned law being made an ass by normal human behaviour?
Is this sending a message "do not show any affection in public to your own children" ..just in case?

How long before it happens here?

Nope, it's sending the message - at least to me - "don't ever go to Brazil".
It's a knee-jerk reaction to a law which, whilst I can understand the authorities there needing to do something about the problem, is badly implemented.

"Another attempt will be made for his release on Tuesday"

Erm... why is he still locked up?!

Why should he have to appeal for his release?!

Why isn't he suing the Brazilian authorities for millions?!

I can understand the law but why didn't they release him when they realised it was a misunderstanding?!?!

What do you mean "going"? It's been barking for the past eight years at least.

He kissed her on the mouth

What? A peck on the lips or a full-blown frenchie?

Facts would be nice before we jump up and down.

Yeah, the word 'kissing' covers a range of activity, one end of which you shouldn't be indulging in with an 8 year old. And your daughter, no less!
If it's on the other end of the scale, then indeed, madness has prevailed. Let's just institutionalise all children to keep them safe and out of harms way now. I'm sure society will be fine when they're allowed to leave at 18.

I only skim-read the story but I saw something about how its a misunderstanding because its his daughter. Why? Is it ok to touch your daughter intimately? lol Surely it would have been better to elaborate that there was no intimate touching!

Is kissing not intimate touching? How about hugging? That's touching and is quite intimate.

The confusion came about becasue he is a white man and his daughter is dark skinned as his wife is Brazilian.

I wonder who will be first to raise the racism issue?

I'm still confused over why he is still locked up though?

Different cultures have different rituals for greeting / departure (among other things) and kissing friends/family members on the lips is fairly common, even when two men meet.

If the Brazilian police can't tell the difference between a familial greeting and sexual abuse, I think they should go on a couple of training courses!

TBH I wouldn't be surprised if this had happened in the UK. Sad, isn't it?

If a child looses it's mother and stands crying in a shopping centre - would you go to it's aid? As a middle aged bloke, quite frankly I'd be scared to be seen within a mile of a child crying "I want my mummy!"

I think it's fair to say that there are more loving parents and kind people than there are child abductors. Not just twice as many, but millions of times as many. We don't know for 100% the full details of this story, but on first appearance it seems to demonstrate the damage that paranoia and the corresponding abuse of basic human rights can cause.

Of course, some people would say it's better to lock up a million innocent adults than let one child be harmed.

When the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many, there you have the recipe for the breakdown of society. The pendulum swings to each extreme and everyone suffers.

Yes. Those people should be locked up.
