Oooh, Barry Lyndon. A classic period drama, and criminally underwatched.

The technical purist in me loves it because Kubrick had a new type of lens developed just so he could shoot the nighttime scenes by candlelight....without any studio light rigs!

Who cares about Kubrick? Where's Uwe Boll in this list?

It surprises me that you, of all people, never knew that.
The film is quite famous for that reason alone.
I'm with you F_A_F, it's criminally underwatched.

It's really hard to find a decent picture of the nighttime scenes in the film to show the impact they have. Most of the images I just googled have crappy granularity on them from the transfer to jpeg. The best I could find is this:

Image

A huge part of any period drama is intimacy, and kubrick's lighting on this film greatly enhances this intimacy by using only candlelight. I hope that it comes out on Blu Ray one day as it will be a real treat!

Few more on this one for me too. I guess as we go higher up we'll recognise more!

From the first page, I've heard of but not seen:
Quote:
98. Unforgiven (1992, Clint Eastwood)
79. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938, Michael Curtiz)

Possibly seen (although I don't remember much of it):
Quote:
89. Trainspotting (1995, Danny Boyle)

And seen:
Quote:
62. Toy Story (1995, John Lasseter)

From the latest set, I've heard of but not seen:
Quote:
60. Psycho (1960, Alfred Hitchcock)
50. Meet Me In St Louis (1944, Vincente Minnelli)
49. Sunset Blvd (1950, Billy Wilder)
47. Gone With The Wind (1939, Victor Fleming)
41. Taxi Driver (1976, Martin Scorcese)

And I've seen:
Quote:
42. Oliver! (1968, Carol Reed)

Obviously my film tastes are very "alternative" to those of Mr Quinn

Well, my Mister and I were running through the list Monday night and I mentioned that I wasn't sure I'd seen it, I remember a scene of Ewan McGregor and another bloke running hell-bent-for-leather through some street somewhere, but that's it, and I could easily have seen that bit during a preview. My Mister asked me if I remembered "the toilet bit" which I don't, and he seems to think that means I haven't seen it, since he's sure I'd remeber that bit. :?

Nine from today's bunch.

LA Confidential and the highly over-rated Taxi Driver (IMO) are the only two I've watched the whole way through there... If a film doesn't look like it's going anywhere within half an hour now I give up - life's too short.

I used to think about films along the 'Alien principle' - slow character build-up leading to potential greatness, but that's just not likely any more
