Somehow, I doubt it, but nothing...

Repeat after me...

NOTHING

And again,

NOTHING

One more time,

NOTHING

would surprise me.

I worked at a shop many moons ago (remember when Software Warehouse opened a store in Donny Spreadie?) and some guy brought his PC in as the bits he bought didnt work. He bought a typical mobo/cpu/ram upgrade. On inspection it turn out he screwed the modo directly to the case. No mounting screws or spacers or washers of any sort. When it blew the second he switched it on he came back to the shop hoping we might be able to do something. Poor chap looked gutted but what can you do!

That's a common mistake. I've seen it on forums and even in Custom PC I think a number of times.

I am glad, though that the daftest mistake I've made was to wonder for two days why my PC crashed when I started gaming- I'd forgotten to connect the extra power cable.

Ah yes, on Duke St IIRC, didn't last very long. Not really surprising in Donny though.

Ouch! I had a mate who'd bought a new CPU and Mobo and called me to see if I would fit it for him, I agreed but it wouldn't be until the following day. He was a little impatient and, having watched me build a few PCs, decided to have a crack at it himself.

It all went well until he flicked the switch. It hadn't occurred to him that the standoff positions were often different for different boards. Zzzzzt! Jammy git managed to plead insanity and get a replacement though!

Yes it was Duke St. The company formed Jungle.com too which was soon bought out by Argos and the retail chain was sold by the MD to a group of directors and investors and went out of business shortly after. Looks like the MD had a knack of selling off at the right time!

I had a PC sold to me like that... bought the PC from a shop in Brighton, it worked for 2 weeks even screwed directly to the case! Then I turned it on and nothing happened... Except that the inside filled up with smoke (was pretty cool as it had a window in the side).

Took it to a different shop and they laughed at the mistake, and promised to build me a new, better PC for the same money when I got my refund.

How the HELL can that happen?!

even modern cards wont let you do that now - when i forgot to plug in the 6-pin after tidying my PC innards i got a polite message when windows started informing me of my mistake, and it continued into windows with decreased clock speeds. it was one of the most pleasant error messages ive ever received :)

but @ the thread linked in the OP, jesus christ i hope that guy was kidding and just butchering an old PC as a joke, id hate to think people that stupid are allowed near electronic equipment, but that photo of a 7950GT with the PCI_E connector lopped off springs to mind...
