Hmm, walked into my local Sparkasse last year, said I was moving to the area and they filled out all the forms for me and had my account transferred before I had left the building. Just needed my driving licence and Aufenthaltsgenehmigung...

A piece of paper which says I am allowed to live in Germany - actually, being an EU citizen, I don't actually need it any more.

But let's say I got the letter and chucked it away. By the time the muppets caught up with me, the letter would probably be in a landfill miles away. Meanwhile, I get my house turned upside down and am left to clean it up. The bank made a mistake. The bank should pay. +1. Once things like that have got out into the criminal world, what can be done? I want retribution. No but they could change the account numbers and pay compensation to get things sorted.

If you reply and say, yeah, guessed it was a mistake, I've destroyed it. That should be fine. The problem, in this instance is that the recipient has been silent, they haven't acknowledged anything. Therefore the bank didn't have any other option, IMHO. I've never said the bank shouldn't pay, but they do have a duty of care for their customers. +1 But if the account is dormant, then they can get rid of the email, no harm done. If the account isn't dormant and they can get in direct contact with the recipient and try and find out what has happened. Which is why the bank have a duty of care to try and find out how bad the damage is... The destination bank usually do that. At least here, you fill out a couple of forms, provide your ID and they will move it all for you.

Yes but as many people use their gmail account for their business. If their business has suffered as a result of their account being blocked, then the bank will have to compensate the Gmail account holder as well for consequential losses. The first thing that the bank should do is fire the person who mailed out the list and their supervisor to send a warning to the rest of the staff.

Given the requests to contact the bank and the press is has attracted, they only have themselves to blame, in that case.
A simple reply to the bank saying they had deleted the message would have probably sufficed - even if the bank couldn't prove it...

I hope so to. But I get spam and other junk mail and I usually delete withough even reading. My mail program has some 500 filters to sort my mail. If it is left in goes to my junk mail folder and unless the subject line is relevant to me it gets deleted without even opening. But how would I prove that?

No way. I'd be suing the bank for loss of earnings. I don't see why my life should be affected by their screw-up.

Email from my bank was always being filtered as spam. It's actually very annoying, and I wish the banks would sort out their bloody MX and SPF records.

I have never even had an email from my bank even though I have an online account.

I get them quite often from both my banks and from my credit card companies. And yes, they're legit. Mostly they tell you to sign into your account to read your on-line statement or secure messages. Perhaps yours are eaten by the spam muncher...

Possibly not I get paper statements, and I double check my junk mail. Though I never click on the links in an email. I use a password manager to get my details. Much safer.
